Kamal Sabri’s versatility with Sarangi

Kamal Sabri hails from the seventh generation of eminent family of traditional musicians. He has received training from his renowned father in Senia Gharana of Rampur, Moradabad from the age of 5. Hereon he had exhibited his skills with the instrument and became a child sensation.  Today he has grown to be one of the frontline Sarangi players with profound versatility with the instrument. He stands out among others with his deftness in handling traditional style of music as well as proving his capability to change with the scenario and incorporating set new trends and standards within his tradition.

Kamal has participated in several prestigious festivals like the Harballabh Music Festival in Jallandhar, the Tansen Samaroh in Gwalior, the Saptak Festival Ahmedabad, the Swami Haridas Music Festival at Mumbai, the World Peace Concert in Delhi and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Swarn Utsav, Hyderabad over the years in India. On the international platform as well he has participated in several International festivals including the Art of the Bow Festival in Geneva in November 2001, World Music Festival, Lahore and the BBC Millennium Concert in Birmingham.

Being a graded artiste of All-India Radio he is also a regular performer on national television. Among his awards for Best Instrumentalist are the Surmani, the Young Maestro Award conferred by the Indo-Sri Lankan Cultural Council and the Young Ustad Khitab at the Prestigious Harballabh Music Festival.
Kamal is the youngest Indian musician to participate in Les 24 heures du raga (The 24-hour Millennium concert) in Paris, France. Kamal has been invited several times by the BBC, Radio France, Radio Pakistan, Radio Switzerland, Radio Italy, Radio Barbados and the Finnish Broadcasting Company.
He has worked with the likes of Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Hossam Ramzy, Ricky Niles from Barbados, Tolonen and performed with Jan Garbarek for the King of Norway. Kamal has recorded his genre of music for famous bands like Massive Attack, One Giant Leap, and for Hollywood and Indian films. he has also been functional in giving music for documentary films, theatre and dance.
