Bharatiraaja is one of the best known directors in South Indian films. He believes that good looks are not essential to become a hero.
Bharatiraaja is known for his penchant for village based subjects. He is also known for his obsessions with newcomers. When asked why he always prefers newcomers, he said,
"Everybody has an actor inside him. The director's work is to touch them at the right spots and bring the actor out on the camera. I believe that an excellent actor resided even within Mahatma Gandhi.
"Good looks are not essential for an actor. This is especially true in case of the male actors. When you select someone for a role, you have to choose them without letting their faces impress you either positively or negatively. I don't think good looks are so essential even for women. They just need a graceful face."
