People are slowly beginning to push contemporary music to the backseat but B. Jayasree, a disciple of Vedavalli is doing all she could to revive the culture. She has the talent and grace to carry on the classical tradition and that too in style. She exposed the qualities and valued features she imbibed in her singing during the three-hour long concert recently.
The concert was rich in all respect and it could have been much better if her voice was used properly. She held her natural voice back and fails to sing with full throttle though she could modulate her voice and add melody. However, her raga alapana is mature and the swarakalpana is in order.
She dared to be different by selecting some rare and attractive songs, which in turn attracted the listeners. He started the concert with a varnam in the ragam kaanada. “Sri Mahaganapathe” in naattai made a good impact with its high octave and a Tamil composition in ataana was sentimental. 'Ardhanareeswaram' in subha pantuvaraliu was pleasant in raga bhava and a composition of Purandara Dasa in kalyana vasantha was incredible. The raga darbar and the krithi, mundu venuka of Thyagaraja were great. Kalyani was chosen for RTP and the popular pallavi, 'Un darisanam kidaikkumo Nataraja', set to adi thalam were rich.
Jayasree succeeded in quenching the thirst of the audience who not only look for technical but also intellectual nature. Dinakar’s contribution on the violin was good and the way he produces nadam from the instrument is commendable. Peravali Jaya Bhaskar was also good on the mridangam. In fact, he has the talent to make it big in the profession.
