Sumitra V is not seen much in concerts but she makes great impact when she does. She exposed her singing talent with wonderful performance at Nada Inbam recently. She has a pleasant voice, which is neither too deep nor too shrill and could traverse comfortably in mantra and tara. These factors have made her well suited to carnatic music.
She looks promising and has everything that a good singer should have. Being a product of R. Vedavalli's School, her music has high quality of discipline and obedience to grammar. The flow of her raga is in sync with sruti and there were no overlaps, repetitions or uncertainty. The way she rendered the brief Devagandhari ("Tulasamma" of Tyagaraja), Saveri ("Velayya" by Koteeswara Iyer), Sankarabharanam ("Dakshinamurthey" by Dikshitar) and Keeravani (RTP) is in harmony with tradition and with articulate karvais and akaras. Her neraval in the Saveri kriti and the pallavi "Pankaja Lochana Paahi Mukunda Mudam Dehi" in Kandajathi triputa talam including trikalam had a systematic approach without any exaggeration. Her swaraprastharas were Spartan, which is pleasing. Being a performing vocalist, Amrutha Murali is a good accompanist and B Sivaraman was energetic in his tani avarthanam in jumpa talam.
