Madhupal had worked both on big as well as small screen. After a decade now he is returning back to film direction. His debut film ‘Thalappavu’ is a saga on friendship. He attempts to make a film that is sensitive, realistic, truthfulness of conscience and friendship. ‘Thalappavu’ stands for turban symbolising power and authority. The title of the movie hints at the brutalities of power meted out to the downtrodden. The film is on the real life story of the killing of a naxalite named Varghese in police encounter in the 1970's.
Madhupal bagged recognition being an actor though he started his career in films as an assistant director. He now turns a full fledged director with his dream film ‘Thalappavu’. Playing the lead in the film are actors Prithviraj and Lal. Prithviraj plays Joseph while Lal plays a cop Raveendran Pillai in ‘Thalappavu’. Atul Kulkarni plays a landlord in the film. Jagathy Sreekumar, Maniyanpillai Raju, Rohini and debutante Dhanya Mary are others in the cast.
About the film the director tells, “The friendship between a person who is killed and the man who killed him. The film will explain what I mean. We live in this world where no one is sure about what will happen to our lives in the next moment. Thalappavu deals with such uncertainties in human lives. It has been a wonderful experience directing the film. it is a film meant for all."
The film has been inspired by the killing of the Naxalite leader Varghese in the early 70s. He was a rebel but stood for the rights of the poor. He was killed in a fake police encounter. The incident hogged the limelight years later when the cop who had fired confessed that he did it on the orders of his senior officials.
Babu Janardhanan has written the script for the film. He brings out the pathos that the policeman went through after killing the naxalite leader through his words. Azhagappan is the cinematographer, ONV Kurup the lyricist and Alex Paul is the music director.
