Realistic filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar attempts another realistic film ‘Fashion’. This happens to be the biggest film of his career so far as far as budget is concerned. The film has top-line actors like Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut in lead roles. As the music directors, composer duo Salim-Sulaiman shares the credit. Irfan Siddiqui is the lyricist. Though Madhur’s films are generally offbeat in theme, here the music is not only theme based but also has musical pleasure.
With interesting arrangement 'Fashion Ka Jalwa' begins. This is a foot tapping title song with catchy theme. Sandeep Nath is the guest lyricist of the track. Satya Hinduja and Robert ‘Bob’ Omulo along with Sukhwinder Singh renders the track. The song basically carries a Western feel however the crooning by Sukhwinder Singh lends an Indian feel to it. There is also a 'remix version' which would fit into the narrative.
A true blue lounge love number is 'Mar Jaava'. It is one of the best songs you have heard in the recent times and this also makes it the best track in this album. Shruti Pathak’s voice gives magical feel to the song. The rendition in her husky, low-key voice coupled with Salim-Sulaiman composition makes it a likeable track. The number later arrives in a 'remix version'. But the original composition gets an upper hand in this case.
Salim Merchant goes for a solo rendition with 'Aashiyana'. This is a soft rock romantic number which is also very pleasant to the ears. DJ Amyth brings the 'remix version' which would make it very favourable for the night club.
'Kuchh Khaas' sounds like a contemporary number in the voice of Mohit Chauhan and Neha Bhasin. Placed in a romantic film, this would have been a chartbusting material. Though it isn’t something out of the world kind, it carries a haunting sound that is infectious. The 'remix version' keeps the contemporary urban mood of the film. For Madhur Bhandarkar who has not inculcated such conventional peppy love songs, this comes as a sheer delight.
Even the last track of the album 'Fashion-Theme' is very impressive. Santoor piece begins the track and just entices one to it. This is followed by a club sound which keeps the rhythm running. The same sound of santoor is revived on a violin which lends it a different touch altogether. There is also a 'remix' version of the number. But Karsh Kale and Medeival Punditz, do more than just remix and give an actually twist to the composition.
‘Fashion’ turns to be a musical pleasure from beginning to end. 'Fashion Ka Jalwa', 'Aashiyana' and 'Kuchh Khaas' comes in the impressive lot while 'Fashion - Theme' and 'Mar Jaava' doesn’t lag behind. Madhur Bhandarkar hasn’t yet created a musical but ‘Fashion’ is all set to break the jinx.
