Movie Review : Maadambi

Producer: Joshy BC
Director: Unnikrishanan B
Cast: Mohanlal, Kavya Madhavan
Music: Jayachandran M

Director B.Unnikrishnan has made ‘Madambi’ keeping in mind Mohanlal’s fans. It is a typical Mohanlal fare certain to provide entertainment being a time-pass family entertainer. It is a formula film with all the ingredients that a Mohanlal film carries. The strength of the film is superstar Mohanlal, and the film stands out for his screen charisma and star power. He is certain to give you the value for your money.

The story is old wine packed in a new bottle! It is as old as hill that the audience have witnessed many times before. However it’s the packaging that is different. Unni very smartly brings onscreen the forte of Mohanlal in comedy, action, emotion and drama. This is one film which belongs exclusively to him.

The film is set in Ilavattom village against a Nair feudal backdrop. Mohanlal  is Puthenveetil Gopalakrishna Pillai, a smart moneylender and local banker. His interest only lies in making money as his father (Sai Kumar) a man who was a patron of arts and temple festivals blew up his entire fortune on it and was cheated by good friend Kurup (Sriraman). After the tragic death of his father, Pillai from a very young age takes care of his family, consisting of his mother (K.P.A.C Lalitha) and brother Ramakrishna Pillai (Ajmal) who aspires to be a movie star. Jagathy is his lawyer, the local 'Karayogam' president (Innocent) and Sooraj Venjaranmoodu who sells foreign cosmetics to girls in his tutorial college.

The twist in the story comes when Jayalakshmi (Kavya Madhavan) comes to the village to set up the Grand Bank. Both clash over this.  Kurup & Sons (Siddique, Vijayakumar, Kiran Raj) are up against Pillai and they use dirty methods to trap him. Pillai's brother falls in love with Kurup's daughter (Malika Kapoor). Pillai marry them off but things turn bad after that as his brother joins hands with his enemies. How Pillai fights them all is what this predictable film is all about.

The first half of the film is entertaining that will keep your interest going but the second half is a complete emotional tear jerker followed by a predictable climax. The roles of Jagathy, Innocent, Siddique, Biju Pappan, Gopakumar, Narayan Nair, K.P.A.C Lalitha, Sriraman are the kinds that one have witnessed many times before. Sooraj Venjaranmoodu doesn’t seem to get over his old jokes. Ajmal delivers an average performance. Malika Kapoor is a miscast. Kavya Madhavan has no romantic scenes with Mohanlal.

The music of the film by M.Jayachandran is among the pluses and the picturisation of the songs are striking.

It is only Mohanlal who makes the film worth a watch! His over-the-top character is entertaining while his performance will be lapped up. He makes the film a spicy affair. He is brilliant and we enjoy watching him.
