Thirumurugan is an ace television serial maker. Unfortunately his latest film Muniyandi Vilangiyal Moonramaandu (Muniyandi, Third Year Zoology) turns out to be nothing more than a serial running continuously for two and-a-half hours. The film is tiring and exasperating to watch. It is another episode of his last film ‘Emttan Mahan’.
It is about father son relationship. The story develops in a college campus in a semi rural place. One can notice the difference of caste in the place. Giving fire to it are two local goons cum politicians. Muniyandi (Bharath) is a happy go lucky kind of chap in his third year Zoology. He loves Madumita (Poorna) madly. She studies in the same college and is the daughter of the local chief and caste leader Ramaiah. He wants men from his caste men like Muni's father Muthumani (Ponvannan) to run the college canteen. During college union election, Sivasamy the leader from the opposing caste causes mayhem leading the college to close indefinitely.
Madhumita's father fixes her marriage elsewhere. She tells Muniyandi, that she has considered him only a friend and has never loved him. Muni in rage slaps her and sets fire to her father's coconut grove. This invokes caste war. Ramaiah’s well-guarded secrets come out of the closet. Both the lovers get separated. Muni comes to know the truth that his brother was murdered by the villain. The havoc continues.
The film suffers mainly because Thirumurugan is not skilled enough to make a commercial film. He is the writer and director but brings to us an ancient film. The script lacks reasoning and the climax is also strained. Vidyasagar fails to create good music for the film.
Fine actors like Bharath and Ponvannan have been wasted in a film like this. Poorna is fine though seems to be aping Asin. Vadivel pulls comedy well.
Thirumurugan should adapt himself and his skills for the big screen films. Otherwise we feel that the small screen is fine for him, which is his domain!
