Movie Review : Alibaba

Producer: Sanjiv Kapoor, Sekar
Director: Neelam K Sekar
Cast: Janani, Krishna, Prakash Raj
Music: Vidyasagar

Director Vishnuvardhan’s brother Krishna is debuting as a hero with this film and owing to this reason there was lots of hype surrounding it. And he doesn’t disappoint. He has managed to pull up a good portrayal as an action hero in the film. The film is produced by Krishna's father Sekhar and directed by Neelam G Sekar.

The film has an interesting story and the twists and turns keep you on the edge. The climax however turns out to be a disappointment. The director deserves a pat on the back for making an action oriented film sans any formulaic story. The story is of the protagonist he faces tough circumstances for no fault of his. How he makes way out of them forms the climax of the film.

Krishna has some resemblance with his brother. He appears cool and suave in the film. Also his body language and mannerisms look apt.  In handling stunts also he excels but he needs some grooming in emotional sequences. Janani screen presence isn’t stunning. Also there is no chemistry between the lead pair onscreen. Thilakan, Biju menon and director Azhagam Perumal are among the other actors. Prakashraj comes in a few scenes but does a commendable job in the. He is the show stealer playing a loving father.

Velu (Krishna) aid his father (Prakashraj) in stealing. Both of them are superb robbers who lay their hands in everything - from pins to cars. There takes place a string of murders of young women in the city. A tough cop (Azhagarperumal) is given in charge of the case. But there occurs differences of opinions between Police Commissioner (Biju menon) and policeman over the enquiry. Velu comes to the aid of Commissioner and saves his life. This is how they both get to know each other. Velu takes a liking for Janani (Janani) who works in a bank. Velu while withdrawing money from bank discovers the amount to be Rs. Five Lakhs which increases to Rs 30 lakh and reaches Rs 70 lakh. Velu’s father discovers the truth behind it. There is lots of action in between. Ultimately Velu comes across the killers of young women in the city. The suspense keeps on ticking until the climax.

The screenplay is engrossing and the debutant director deserves credit for it. However he seems to be in a hurry to end the film. Vidyasagar's music isn’t pleasing.

The first part keeps the momentum on but had the second half been dealt in an interesting manner, the director would have made a fantastic film.
