Movie Review : Pandurangadu

Producer: Krishna Mohan K
Director: Raghavendra Rao K
Cast: Balakrishna, Sneha, Tabu, Vishwanath K
Music: Keeravani MM

Director Raghavendra Rao changed his track from a commercial filmmaker and got into devotional and periodical films and got fair amount of success from those. With 'Pandurangadu' the audience expect the team of the director and Balakrishna in the lead, to weave magic once again. The script of the film finds ingredients from classic 'Panduranga Mahatmyam'. The film stands true to its expectations and for RK Associates banner here is another classic in the making as well.

Pundareeka (Balakrishna) hails from a family of Lord Krishna devotees. However he is not that pious at heart and becomes a disobedient and irresponsible youth. His time pass involves enjoying with girls who are after his good looks. Lakshmi (Sneha) is an orphan brought up by a priest (Balayya). She comes from an orthodox family and is also a devotee of Lord Krishna. Pundareeka falls for a prostitute Amritha (Tabu) and keeps spending nights with her. Lord Krishna comes in the dream ofLakshmi and tells her that Pundareeka would be her husband. Lakshmi following this impresses Pundareeka’s family but fails to win him. Lord Krishna intervenes and this follows with a marriage between the two. But Pundareeka still can’t let go off Amritha and visits her leaving Lakshmi disappointed. Lord Krishna once again comes to her aid and unites Pundareeka with Lakshmi. Both are happy in their life when a crisis strikes them with Amritha's mother (Y Vijaya) planning to grab his entire property. Pundareeka along with his family go out of the house on the plan of Amritha's mother. How Pundareeka overcomes the crisis, forms the crux of the story.

Balakrishna has given an excellent performance in this film. His character of Pundareeka, has negative shade mostly. As Pundareeka and also as Lord Krishna he pulled off the role with ease. The director also deserves credit in shaping the character of Krishna with a touch of comedy. The fans of Nandamuri clan would be happy to see him in the avatar of Lord Krishna. Tabu playing the prostitute was dressed scantily as per the requirement of the film and has a romance track throughout. Snaha is presentable as a simple family girl in the film. Viswanath, Balayya, Prasadbabu, Sivaparvati and Sana do their part well. Sunil and Brahmanandam’scomedy don’t come hilarious. Mohanbabu plays an apt character though he comes in the film in only two scenes.

Writer JK Bharavi has rewritten the script to suit the preferences of present day audience. Audiences might object to the overdose of romantic scenes in the first half but they ought to understand that it was necessary to portray a lust filled man who ultimately turns devotional with the intervention of Lord Krishna. The original script was almost similar to this. The devotional part appears only in the last part of the film.
