Showman of India Subash Ghai after a long haul returns back to direct his new venture ‘Black & White’. He weaves a saga which is a mix of offbeat and commercial track, dealing with the grave topic of terrorism. Anil Kapoor, Shefali Chhaya, newcomer Anurag Sinha and Aditi Sharma comprise the lead cast of the film. after ‘Halla Bol’, once again Sukhwinder Singh does the music for this film on the lyrics of Ibraheem Ashq.
Lyrically rich and musically classy is the first track of the album ‘Main Chala’. Though the track is a situational piece, the narration of a man’s journey through varied phases of life sums for an interesting affair. Sukhwinder’s honeyed smooth voice further elevates it. Shreya redoes the track and adds to pleasure hearing. She exprsses the women’s journey and her resounding vocal indeed is appreciable.
Time for celebration with ‘Peer Manavan’ in the voices of Sukhwinder and Shradha Pandit. As the lyrics suggest this is a Punjabi folk number with the instruments adding to the flavour. There is a remix version as well laced with western orchestration.
‘Jogi Ayaa’ has Sukhwinder Singh facing the mike once again with Sadhna Sargam giving him company. Among the good going so far, this number also adds to the greatness of the album. A soft number, this one will surely impress you. However a remix version just sound a little weird as far as arrangement is concerned.
Sufi music is in vogue and this album is also laced with one. Sukhwinder and Hans Raj Hans team up for ‘Haq Allah’. A situational number it sounds like a protagonist’s prayer.
The film has patriotic overtones and ‘Yeh Hindustan Hai’ is a justified patriotic track. Udit Narayan does the vocals. But the number fails to click. Jagjit Singh’s version is good enough but it certainly won’t be counted among the best.
For a Subhash Ghai film it’s a far cry from his earlier films music. But Sukwinder Singh has done a commendable job. He is showing great potential as music director and presents better compositions than his former film ‘Halla Bol’. One expects to hear more from this playback singer turned music director.
