The film buzzes off with a startling telephone call that shudders Dia (Madhuri Dixit) out of her dance rehearsal in New York. Her guru Makarand (Darshan Zariwala) is on the verge of dying and wants to see her before he leaves for his heavenly abode. For this, Dia must return to her hometown Shamli, a place she absconded impulsively decades ago.
Dia’s return is bogged down by pain of loss of her guru and the fear of losing the institution, which her guru dotingly raised for the cause of art, to the selfish local political goons. Ajanta theatre, the once lively hub of the community, the place where Dia's fondest reminiscences are rooted is now under the threat of annihilation.
With some boost up by Doctor (Raghubir Yadav), the caretaker of Ajanta, Dia sets out to shield the institution from the wrath of bulldozers. In an environment of distrust, scorn and vigorous antagonism, Dia picks up the gauntlet and determines to accomplish the near impossible task of putting together a theatrical production. With only a couple of months in hand to prove her point, Dia takes on the mission to revive Ajanta again.
And from here begins her turbulent ride, where everyday she has to face small town chauvinism, meeting the biles of influential contractors, the skepticism of the local political powers, settle on the frail tensions of inter personal dealings and unite her dissimilar team of non starters - a low level muscle Imran (Kunal Kapoor), the local tomboy Anokhi (Konkona Sen), local ex-MLA Chaudhary Om Singh (Akhilendra Mishra), a helpless tea stall owner Mohan Sharma (Ranvir Shorey), a dependable government official Mr. Chojar (Vinay Pathak), a careworn insurance agent Sanjeev Mehta (Jugal Hansraj), the town tramp Dhankuber (Nowaz) and a host of others.
She is left with the task of breathing soul into a lifeless, heartless town. Art is her only savior. Stage is set and the performers are ready. Whether the play will take off for not is only for time to say!
