‘Silanerangalil’, directed by Malayalam director Jaya Raj and produced by Ram New Light Productions Ltd, founded by 4 US based NRI, is a thriller with a very different backdrop. Tight script, lively music, spectacular cinematography (Rajvel), and powerful performances by the main actors are the strengths of the film.

The film begins with news narrating a murder case that took place in mid sixties, where a husband has been accused of murdering his wife and getting sentenced to death. Navya Nair dreams of getting killed by a man. She is wearing the kind of dress worn in the sixties. She cannot identify the man but gets very frightened after seeing the dream. She recalls her past as she comes to terms with her present. She is boarded in a Christian Missionary, under care of Jo (Vincent Asokan). He is the person in charge for the rehabilitation of physically and mentally challenged persons. He calls her Anjali and also likes her in his heart. Krishnan (Raghuvaran), expert in hypnotist therapy comes to her aid. Facts are revealed that she is the reincarnation of the girl, who was allegedly killed by her husband in 1965. Still she is unable to recall her past in this birth.

Also they find out the possible reason for the murder. The husband suspected an affair between his wife and his friend, a famous playback singer Madhavan (Vineeth). In hypnotic sleep she identifies the husband. The reincarnation of the husband is none other than Jo. This makes Anjali afraid of Jo. The doctor starts counseling Jo by putting him into hypnotic sleep and they find out that it was not Jo who had actually murdered her. They don’t trust him and feel that he might repeat the effort in this birth as well. Jo is shattered to discover the truth as he is in love with Anjali. He begins to solve the puzzles of the murder that took place forty years ago. This follows with an unexpected twist.

Jaya Raj has presented well a thriller based on reincarnation theory. He has brought out the best performance from the cast. The script is well crafted and deftly executed. Also the thrill comes with the right dosage of comedy making it an engrossing affair. The flash back scenes have been executed very well. He has credibly recreated the feelings of sixties. There are also some missing links in the mystery.

Art director Muthuraj, music director Srikanth Deva, and lyricist Vairamuthu have also worked in co-ordination to bring the essence of sixties. Veteran playback singer P. Susheela returns to render a song for the film after a long gap.
