Movie Review : Happy Days

Producer: Sekhar Kammula
Director: Sekhar Kammula
Cast: Gayatri Rao, Monali Chowdhary, Nikhil, Sonia, Varun Sandesh
Music: Micky J Meyer

Sekhar Kammula’s new release ‘Happy Days’ is flooded with feel good factor that hardly fails to exude happiness and color all around. Steeped in the hay days of college life, this flick brings the audience something novel to savor instead of regular everyday stuffs.

The greatest merit of this flick is its brilliant narration. Although the film trails on a very uncomplicated storyline, Sekhar nevertheless shows his deft by garnishing his tale with ideal characterization. Sekhar is a brilliant narrator who holds the strength to enamor his audiences by his spick and span narration.

In his film about the young college goers, the director seems to concentrate more on the positive gay side of it rather than losing his story to unreal fiction or violence and campus politics. This film spins around four years of life in an engineering college and all credit should be showered on this nifty director for pulling off the tale with great flair.

The biggest strength of the film lies in the fact that it is easily relatable. Very single fellow who have ever been to college will simply adore this stuff. The plot primarily covers the life and leisure of eight youths, Chandu (Varun Sandesh), Rajesh (Nikhil), Tyson (Raahul), Shankar (Vamsee Krishna), Madhu (Tamanna), Apu (Gayatri Rao), Sangeetha (Monali Chowdhury) and Shravanti (Sonia) who enters the Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology. Chandu plies in as the narrator in the film.

This film has ample dose of everything that one experience during college days – love, jealousy, competition, romance, betrayal, crush, emotions and everything one can think of. But amidst all these elements love seems to take the front seat. Chandu and Madhu take a liking to each other, Tyson loves Sonia, who is senior to him, Shankar loves Sangeeta who turns the tables on Shankar. Nikhil at first has a crush on his English teacher Shreya (Komalini Mukherjee) but later falls for Apu. But sadly things aren’t at all rosy for them.

Kudos to the director for his brilliant characterization. Each of the characters are individually sketched out with their own set of traits, temperament and characteristics that at once clicks with the audiences. Debutant actors like Varun, Nikhil, Raahul, Vamsee Krishna, Gayatri Rao, Sonia and Monali Chowdhury as well as the established actress Tamanna are fully convincing in their roles. They play out the roles in celluloid, which each one of us has actually lived during their hay days.

Sekhar once again walks away with all honors for squeezing out the best from his cast. The novice actors’ dazzle in their first on screen attempt while refined actors too put in a great show. Komalini Mukherjee is extraordinary in her cameo.

The initial half of the film introduces the characters to us as well as briefs us on their fun and frolicky life style. The film also has some good helping of bizarre comedy as well.

There is also a hint of class opus in the film. The second half of it is loaded with a bit too much of tears and emotional jerks as compared to the first half. The film tends to lug in these parts but gains pace towards the end where it winds up with significant messages.

Mickey J Meyers delegates wonderful symphonies for the soundtrack and even the background score sounds striking. The musician has doled out some fine juvenile music for the soundtrack.

Cinematography by Vijay C Kumar is also stupendous and adds to the positives of the film.

Even though this flick is out and out a young film with love, romance, fights and numerous other emotions, it nevertheless is a clean entertainer perfect for family viewing. Sekhar triumphantly revives back old memories with his flick that makes for a great watch.
