Shyamaprasad's new Malayalam film ‘Ore Kadal’ takes a dig on a relationship that discovers lust, ethics, guilt and love at one go. Starring Mammootty, Meera Jasmine and Narein, the film is an adaptation of Sunil Gangopadhyay's Bengali novel Heerak Deepti.
It tells the story of a special relationship between an economist/thinker and a housewife. Mammooty brings to life the economist and thinker on screen. His versatility is evident in portraying a special intellectual character who finds no special meaning for intimate human relationships in life. But through different situations in the story, he gets involved with a woman who is already married. This relationship develops and strays beyond social norms. This illegitimate liaison haunts the woman and the mighty intellectual is swayed by a relationship for the first time in his life.
When Mammooty dons the intellect’s attire, Meera Jasmine lives through the housewife. Both are extremely proficient actors and have contributed their full capacity in this film. Though renowned for accepting bold subjects in films, it is yet to know how the hypocritical malayalee society would react to this subject.
Dr. S.R. Nathan (Mammootty) is an internationally acclaimed economist. He is a thinker and he is researching on fiscal and economic matters and developments. Though he has name and fame and is an intellectual of high class, he is basically a loner and an alcoholic. He doesn’t pay any heed to the way he dresses and ends up looking shabby. In strange circumstance he meets Deepthi (Meera Jasmine) who is married to Narain. She attends her sick son in the absence of her unemployed husband in an alien city. Dr Nathan over hears her helping yell from her husband. There develops a relationship between the husband and wife and the economist. He helps Deepti with her son. Nathan likes to believe that it just a physical thing, but Deepti desires something more. She is devastated when she learns about his feelings, and starts distancing herself from Nathan. This forms the crux of the film.

Shyamaprasad has handled this sensitive film in a fascinating manner. He presents the intellectual Nathan and the naive Deepti simplistically. He offers then a common ground for themselves. Also Nathan’s loss of Deepti is handles skillfully. His emotions never come straightforward in the film. Narein character demands more from the film. However his frivolous attitude might have been brought to the front that he extends towards his wife and child.
Mammootty gets to the skin of the character. He excels portraying the snobbish characteristics of the protagonist. Meera Jasmine is perfect for her role playing a mother and wife. She strikes a balance between adventurous zeal and maturity.
