‘Kireedam’ is a Tamil remake of a Malayalam classic and the best part is that it is well made, not a typical mass film starring a superstar and doesn’t let us down. Both energy and emotions have been blended well making it an ideal family entertainer. Ajit takes a break from his hysterical larger-than-life roles and it is a welcoming change. It is a realistic story of a loving father who has honest desires to see his son become a policeman before he retires. Laced with touching moments, Raj Kiran and Ajit playing father and son breathe life into the story. The screenplay has been weaved with intelligent moments, comedy, emotions and a gripping tale that touches you. The father-son bonding, and the sentiments does pull your hearts string!
Rajarajan (Raj Kiran) is an upright head constable at a Tiruchi police station and he is a doting father. He follows the rules and believes that policemen are the caretakers of the society who should strive to do good for the public. His trust lies on his eldest son Sakthivel (Ajit) waiting for his selection to the police force. Rajarajan’s family comprises his wife (Saranya), two daughters, one being married to idler (Vivek), and two sons. Sakthi and Divya (Trisha) a college student after a few initial meeting loaded with comedy fall in love. The families agree to the marriage and just then comes a twist in the story. Rajarajan is given a punishment transfer for slapping the local MLA’s son for misbehaving with another policeman in public. Rajarajan doesn’t apologise to the MLA’s son and is sent to Kodaikal, an infamous place ruled by a gangster Varadarajan (Ajay). O landing there Rajarajan discovers that Sub Inspector (Ravi Kala) has been beaten up by Varadan and the cops fearing his wrath don’t file an FIR. Trouble follows for his family when Sakthi gets into a troublesome situation he has nothing to do with. Sakthi gets selected as an SI but some incidents change their life forever.

Ajit is refreshing in the film and has never done a film as such formerly in his career. He glides easily through this complex role and delivers his best performance. From his looks, expression, eye language he co-ordinates well and excels in the climax. Also his romantic encounters are worth watching. In this action-based family drama about father-son relationship Trisha also gets a fair deal with her exuberant role, beautiful looks and lighthearted performance. Her comedy antics are worth mentioning as she outdoes the others. Raj Kiran delivers flawless acting and lives his part as a doting but strict disciplinarian father. Saranya and K P A C Lalitha are okay. Vivek-Santhanam evokes laughter. Ajay however doesn’t look the kind of villain that the role demands out of him.
G V Prakash’s music is rocking one of the best part of the enterprise and the track , ‘Kanavellam’ laced with meaningful lyrics of Na. Muthukumar is wonderful. Antony’s editing is crisp making the film a good watch. Tirru’s camera work is fascinating as he captures Vizag and Kerala locales gelling with the mood of the film. Director Vijay’s attempt to make a straight-from- the-heart movie does succeed and he also manages to give Ajit a new image breaking away from his mass masala formula. Producer Suresh Balaje and his team need to be applauded for making this brave and daringly different film within the commercial format.
‘Kireedam’ is an entertainer not worth missing!
