Vasanth is back after a yawning pause with his next silver screen offering ‘Satham Podathey’ that features super hit actors like Prithviraj and Padmapriya in the leads. Vasanth’s film forever carries a close resemblance to reality and this time it isn’t anything different either. ‘Satham Podathey’ is a worthy addition to Vasanth's cannon of films.
This thriller flick, based on a real life incident, is devoid of all glamour and glitz. Vasanth narrates the tale exceedingly well without ever sounding artificial.
The story hovers around Ratnavelu (Nithin Satya), an impotent drunkard, who marries Bhanu (Padmapriya) without letting her or her family know about his dark truth. After marriage when Bhanu comes to know about it, she doesn’t leave him. Nor does she have any inkling of his erratic drinking habits. She is naïve enough to think that her husband too was unaware of his condition until he got married. But by the time she divorces him and gets married again to Ravichandran (Prithviraj), she becomes quite sure that her husband is nothing but a dreadful psychopath. Afterwards her ex-husband returns to make her life hell and kill her.
The first half of the film has a series of proceedings running along that have a hint of reality in them. But the latter half drags along and the two item tracks in this part simply leaves us wondering about its real worth.
Actress Padmapriya walks away with all the kudos at the end of the day because of her brilliant performance. Her out of the world acting incessantly makes us pour our hearts out with sympathy. This role truly bears the testimony to the actress’ fine skills.
Prithviraj impresses with his brilliant comic timings. His brief romance with the heroine offers some light moments between this edgy drama.
Camera work by the debutante cinematographer Dinesh Kumar is simply great. He captures neatly and beautifully the vacillation of the psychopath Ratnavelu as he dwindles between pretence of innocence and unqualified badness.
Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja has stirred a great buzz among the listeners. But the musician fumbles with his background scores as he delivers extremely annoying wild vocals and loud beats.
Vasanth does a pretty good job with his direction that gets us a nice thriller flick to savor into. A decent job.
