It is generally seen that all Kollywood flicks are tilted against emotions. Most recently it is seen that Madurai has become the hub of all moviemakers. Murthy’s debut directorial venture ‘Karuppusamy Kuthagaitharar’ appears to trail in the similar trend. Murthy tries to arrest the ethnicity and way of life in Madurai with great dexterity. He pleases his audiences with his skilful portrait of rustic Madurai.
Karan handles his job well and is nevertheless impressive. Donning the robe of the lead role, he appears to have an undying zeal for his native land. There are also shades of Madurai jargon in his everyday speech delivered with great accuracy. Murthy confirms his excellence by hooking in the exact roles for all the artistes. Karan appears extremely at ease in his role. He deviates from his otherwise hyperbolic role to play out a quainter one. He pleases with his stunts.
This is the account of an effervescent young lad who strives to educate his ladylove. The flick launches a new female face in the world of silver screen, Meenakshi, who plays the female lead with great conviction and appears to be very promising.
The story hovers around Xerox a.k.a. Karuppasamy (Karan) who has a cycle stand close to Madurai Central bus stand. He also has a dance group who performs only in temple celebrations, which is an inherent tradition in Madurai. Xerox lives a very untroubled life in the company of his friends until Meenakshi (Meenakshi) enters into the scene.
Meenakshi who is practicing her M.B.B.S happens to visit Karuppasamy’s cycle stand everyday. His caring words remind her of her deceased mother whom she misses very much. Soon the two fall in love but Karuppasamy makes sure that she completes her education. But no sooner Meenakshi’s family learns about this newly bloomed affair, they try to get rid of Karuppasamy.
Karuppasamy agrees to let go of his love only with the conviction that Meenakshi’s family would let her finish here education. Whether Meenakshi finishes her edification or not forms the rest of the story.
Murthy enlivens the essence of Madurai with his splendid direction. All the characters are more or less very boisterous. Vadivelu adds to the comic scenes in the film. Karan entices with his superb performance. He is a very energetic soul and emotes with great astute in the cinema. Sakthi Kumar in the role of Meenakshi’s brother delivers well.
Dheena mesmerizes with his heartfelt music especially the title track that appears somewhere in the climax. Although the film is good to watch, it nevertheless has prolonged scenes and unnecessary tracks.
But on the whole the film is a good effort on the director’s part and thankfully is devoid from all affectations.
