Movie Review : Savalee

Producer: Shivendu G Aggarwal
Director: Rajendra Talak
Cast: Reema Lagoo
Music: Ashok Patki

Comparisons are almost inevitable when one is born to affluent parents and desire to tread in the similar line of work. While some take this assessment positively in their stride, on the other hand, it shatters the weaker ones self esteem.

Prominent Goan director Rajendra Talak delves into this thin-skinned subject in his bilingual flick ‘Savalee’ which is being produced by Shivendu Agarwal's National Education and Information Films.

The story mainly gyrates around Ramabai Shirodkar (Reema Lagoo), a seasoned classical vocalist and her daughter Sanika (Amruta Subhash). Ramabai is out and out a conventional, austere singer who wants Sanika to stomach in all the canons of classical music but Sanika is more inclined towards contemporary music. Feeling smothered under her mother’s austere guidance, she wishes to flee away. All her predicaments, tests and her struggle to step out from her mother’s shadow are well depicted throughout.

The compositions of this music based film forms the spine of it. Ashok Patki impresses with his stupendous compositions that gels well with its temperament. Illustrious singers from classical domain like Savani Shende, Aarti Anklikar-Tikekar and Devaki Pandit pulls off the songs with great beauty and splendor.

Performances by seasoned actors contribute to accelerate the opulence of the film.  Reema Lagoo delves deep into the skin of her character to foray Reemabai’s role flawlessly. Amruta Subhash in the role of self-doubting and go-getting young girl comes up as a fresh surprise. This film once again shocks with Indi-pop singer Swapnil Bandodkar posing in front of the camera.

With Goa as its backdrop, this film glides all the way to city where Sanika shifts to quench her ambition. The film closes on a note of wisdom for the audience to grab.

But aside from all its teachings, what impresses most in the film is Talak’s efficient handling of this tender subject. Instead of snaking too much around all the superfluities and nick-knacks of film making, Talak chooses to concentrate on the essence of the film, which he accomplishes with grand flourish. On the whole, a sumptuous treat for ears and brain.
