Movie Review : Nee Naan Nila

Producer: Viswanathan R
Director: Sivakumar MPS
Cast: Bharathan, Meghna, Rai
Music: Dhina

Kollywood has witnessed the success story of many films that did not boast of any high-flying names. It doesn’t always need big shots to deliver hits in the industry. A capable script, able star cast, and a tightly knitted story that doesn’t claptrap the audience is all needed to guarantee the success of a film at the box-office. However, this hypothesis takes a twirl in case of ‘Nee Naan Nila’, which is an indisputably vain effort in the director’s part to deliver something, which he opined as his rare gift to the big screen.

‘Nee Naan Nila’ like many other films made in the eighties is inspired from the beguiling Hollywood hit ‘Ghost’. This film treads on the same line with the only difference being that it is a triangular love tale where two guys fall in love with the same girl with only winning her favor in the end.

But like all good things, this love affair too is short-lived as the boy gets killed in an unfortunate accident. While the audiences are left to contemplate whether the love of the second hero will reach its climax or not, the director thrills us with a complete turn of affairs. What follows is a wacky culmination of the tale that engages the spirit of the dead protagonist, eternally mournful heroine, and the one-sided lover. All these simply leaves us wondering whether to wail out with laughter or simply tear our hair at the cacophony of the story.

Director M.P.S. Sivakumar aimed at giving his audience something new and different. But sadly he does awkwardly with the story as well as direction. He has failed to breathe in element of reality within the story that led to its big fall.

The initial part of the film is set in college campus and is dominated entirely by Karunas. Apart from him the only name we recognize in the film is that of Manivannan. Dina arranges the soundtrack but with poor results.

As for the performances, the acting is simply passable. The only thing worth mentioning about the film is its enchanting settings and camera work.

This film, which attempts to be different, is altogether a screwball devoid of any logic and sensibility. A terrible watch for sure!
