Movie Review : Pirappu

Producer: Piramila
Director: Ilangovan LV
Cast: Prabha, Karthika, Magadevan, Saranya, Vijaya Krishnaraj, Kanja Karuppu, Sulakshana
Music: Bharadwaj

Debut director Ilangovan shows some promise while tackling an outdated cast based theme in S. R. Film International’s Pirappu. Kannan (played by debutant Prabha) who is born out of an inter-cast wedlock is sent for adoption by his parents much against his wish to an upper cast family. Marudhu (Mahadevan) and Kaliamma (Saranya) the inter-cast couple are childless and are known to Kannan’s family for a long time. Kannan becomes a loner in the new environment. Kaliamma’s younger brother Shankarapandi (Shanmugaraja) opposes the adoption as he is eyeing for the wealth of Marudhu who is also the village head. On the suggestion of his crony, Shankarapandi agrees to give his daughter Padma (Karthika) to Kannan only to usurp his brother-in-law’s wealth. But by then Kannan befriends a research scholar (played by Mayukha) and falls in love with her. This irks Shankarapandi. He plots to kill his brother -in-law and sister in an accident and he does succeed. A dejected Kannan walks out of the village after a scuffle with Shankarapandi and makes him repent at his ghastly act. As Kannan walks down, Padma joins him.

A heavy subject but the lead actors are newcomers and could not carry the heavy roles on their shoulders. It is the experienced Saranya, Mahadevan and Sulakshana (as the mother of Kannan) and to some extent Shanmugaraja who does justice to their roles. Nothing much can be said of the technical values either though the film opens with a black and white scene to create a flash back impact.
