Hat Trick narrates four stories dealing with the triumph of human spirit along with the journey of the Indian Cricket team in its quest for the Cup. There are four protagonists in the film who pull out a trick from their hat something that they’ve never done before but they need to do to win. All the stories are connected with cricket and are set in its backdrop and the World Cup Cricket to be played in the Caribbean in 2007. The film opens with the beginning of Cricket World Cup 2007 and finishes with their triumph with the Indian team moving ahead in the World Cup. The characters in the film simultaneously lead their life, realize their folly and emerge as winners at last.
Madhav Anna is a legendary leg spinner, an ex-cricketer who lives every moment of his film and his devoted to cricket. To undergo treatment for his ill health he is admitted in hospital and is under the supervision of Dr. Satyajeet Chavan. But their relationship turns out to be chalk and cheese, as Dr. Satyajeet hates cricket and so Madhav Anna will have to skip watching world cup during his stay at the hospital. But Madhav Anna had been a terrific wicket keeper and he breaks Dr. Satyajeet slowly but steadily. Dr. Satyajeet undergoes a life changing experience with Madhav Anna and restores the relationship with his wife Surekha and son Mihir. Also he develops a new rapport with members at the hospital and his change of heart also allows Madhav Anna to watch the world cup before his operation. Madhav survives the operation and Dr. Satyajeet learns to live again. Its optimism and persistent effort that is the message of the story.
Hemu Patel, his wife Priya Patel and his erratic daughter Natasha aka Nattie Patel live in London. Hemu Patel is also a cricket fan and never misses a match in the local pub along with his friends. He is an illegal immigrant living in London for 16 years. Hemu is willing to go to any extent to get British Citizenship to solve their financial worries and come to India to meet his dear ones. But Mr. Cook the citizenship officer in-charge gives him a tough time understanding that he is faking his patriotism for England. He feels that he is a victim of racism. But life changes for him just like the turning point in cricket. One needs to work on their own strengths is what Hemu teaches.
Saby aka Sarbjeet Singh and Kashmira are complacent in life but undergo transition to take charge of life. Saby is a struggling actor to get his break in films and is a cricket fanatic. His rich Dad finances the parties for producers and directors and the poojas that he organizes to lead him to success. Kashmira is a gorgeous airhostess and Saby keeps himself watching her through binoculars when he is not watching cricket. Kashmira is independent and soon she gets drawn towards Saby and gets married to him. Saby certainly doesn't know how to keep the commitment. Soon they realize that they have extremes likes and dislikes - he loves cricket, she hates it; he wants work through poojas and parties but she thinks this is foolishness; she loves dogs, he hates them! Their attempt to make their marriage work lead them to deeper trouble. Saby at last seeks divorce. But his father makes him realize that nothing in life comes easy. Its efforts and hard work that one needs to hold onto constantly. Saby takes charge of the situation and brings his life on the right track.
