Eklavya (Amitabh Bachchan) is a royal guard who guards a majestic fort and is the caretaker of a royal dynasty that no longer rules. He lives in a time warp and his sole aim is to protect the fort, the dynasty and the king. His family for nine generations has been protecting the centuries old citadel Devigarh in Rajasthan. Eklavya is devoted to serve the royals and their close guarded secrets. But he has aged now and is growing blind.

The heir of the kingdom Prince Harshwardhan (Saif Ali Khan) has been brought up in London unable to take in the overpowering customs of his land. He returns back to India after the sudden death of his mother Rani Suhasinidevi (Sharmila Tagore). The dilapidated fort shines with joy on his arrival. Here lives his mentally challenged twin sister Princess Nandini (Raima Sen) and his childhood love Rajjo (Vidya Balan) who’re ecstatic to get him back in their life again. But this happiness doesn’t last forever. The kingdom is full of strife for the farmers who are robbed off their lands by the king Rana Jaywardhan (Boman Irani) who is influenced by his brother Rana Jyotiwardhan (Jackie Shroff). The king receives a death threatening call and Pannalal Chohar (Sanjay Dutt) is called to investigate.
