Movie Review : Patchai Kili Muthucharam

Producer: Oscar Films
Director: Gowtham Menon
Cast: Sarathkumar, Jothika,
Music: Harris Jayaraj

It isn’t everybody’s cup of tea to line up a spine-chilling story against a commercial film. And Gautham and co. achieves commendable success in their enterprise ‘Pachai Kili Muthucharam’ which just chills you with its unnerving plot. This is a sleek flick dazzled up with glitz and glamour. Gautham comes up with an entertaining movie that is smart and captivating. Everything, right from the script to the performance and appearance is mind-boggling.

Gautham has drawn out his inspiration for the movie from the book ‘Derailed’ but nevertheless he enhances the story with his own personal touch. Besides he is lucky to be blessed with such splendid star cast who beautifully manage to pull the story with panache. Sarath is a near life character who emerges victorious in his role. The same can be said about Jyothika as well.

‘Pachai Kili Muthucharam’ is Gautham’s answer to all those naysayers who say that commercial movies have to be made under compulsions.

The story is about Venkatesh (Sarath Kumar) who is a very regular kind of guy. He is a very self-satisfied man who does not like to go beyond his own territory. For him, his life and work are all in all. He is a no fuss man who dearly loves his wife Kalyani (Andrea). And they are also blessed with a son, Nanda who is said to be suffering from diabetes.  But soon enough this picture perfect family drifts apart for no solid reason. It is at this juncture that Venky spots Geetha (Jyothika).

Venky gets smitten by Geetha’s mysterious beauty and crosses his lines. It is then all hell breaks loose. Next starts the series of blackmails that totally ruins his peace.

Gautham introduces a new twist with every scene. And to add to the suspense is the uncanny dialogues. Sarath is superb in his performance. Jyothika is perfection personified. She is the real scene-stealer. She is a very complex character who appears normal on the surface but wears a mysterious veil throughout. Milind Soman, the super model acts out his part with great ease and finesse. Andrea also impresses in the role of an obedient devoted wife.

Harris Jayaraj rocks with his music that aptly goes with the feel of the flick.

Aravind Krishna’s angles and the unusual play of lights give your everyday vignettes a new focus.

Anthony’s editing is simply brilliant that goes well with the cadence of the flick.

Gautham has broken all lines with his movie. A splendid treat to all movie lovers.
