Malluwood’s most coveted actor Mohanlal once again steps into the world of grim cinema with his next film ‘Paradesi’ directed by ingenious director P.T.Kunju Mohammed. This film narrates the plight of scores of people who are treated as outsiders in their own land due to lack of any concrete identity proof.
In this film, Mohanlal dons the role of an eighty-year-old man, Valiyakathu Moosa who is the son of a freedom fighter and is an envoy of this kind of populace. To the Indian government he is a Pakistani, and to the Pakistani government he is an Indian. He is man with confused identity to the authorities.
Valiyakathu Moosa is one of hundreds of Malayalees who left to work in Karachi during the days of the British Raj and returned after independence to India in the 1960s and settled in Malappuram. He like all other immigrants does not have any concrete document of his authentic identity. Many took him as Pakistani spy and quite often he has to face troubles from law bearers. Moosa’s wife and children bear Indian citizenship but he is barred the citizenship of the state because of some technical objections from the government.
Mohanlal dons various getups to portray this arduous role. Lakshmi Gopalswamy is cast opposite him. Kavya Madhavan portrays the role of a press officer scrutinizing the life and livelihood of this nonessential section of society. It is through her numerous attempts to find a way out of the trials and tribulations that envisage people like Moosa that the story unfurls itself. The story dwindles to and fro between the past and present as the story progresses in flashback.
The director is hopeful of this film’s success since it has the right ingredient to impress the masses. Ramesh Narayan and Shahsaad Aman compose for the soundtrack. Don Max does the editing. This film is gearing up for Ramzan release.
