The story of the film is about a rich businessman Balraj Kapoor (Amitabh Bachchan). Though he treasures family values and ideals in life his outlook towards life is progressive. He is happily married to Shobhna (Hema Malini) who is much more than wife to him. Their happiness revolves around their only son Avinash (Salman Khan). Balraj and Avinash share a wonderful rapport and they are more of friends then father and son. Avinash studies abroad and returns back after completing his education. With this happiness once again fills their life.
But its Avinash’s marriage with Millie (Rani Mukherjee) that makes their home a paradise. Avinash falls in love with Millie who is a painter and they decide to get married. Soon Kapoor’s adds another member, a lovely child Ansh. When everything in their life was going as beautiful as it could, the blow of sudden tragedy changes it all. Avinash meets with a fatal accident. It’s very hard for all of them to bear the loss and cope up with it. Especially Millie is heart broken. Balraj and Shobhna look at Ansh in searching for their lost son Avinash. Balraj cannot bear to see Millie this way leading a colourless life and decides to find a life partner for her. He searches for Rajat (John Abraham) a young musician who was also the best friend of Millie. He loved her but could never say her feelings to her. After Millie and Avinash got married he concentrated on his musical career and settled in Europe. Balraj wants Rajat to marry Millie and make her cheerful once again. But there is an obstacle as his elder brother Balwant (Om Puri) settled in rural Punjab with his family and his widowed sister-in-law objects to it. Balraj may have to fight for the cause alone, as may be this time Shobhna might also not support him. Also will he be able to convince Millie who believes that love and marriage happens only once in lifetime?
