‘Utthaan’ is the story of present generation who want to be at the peak of name, fame and money within a short time literally, without having any directions how to achieve it. Their goal is the elite society, which only esteems money and glamour. And to achieve that they are ready to compromise on their principles and self respect. It’s a story on the corruption of the individual mind, hypocrisy, selfishness, and how politics and media forms its base. Priyanshu Chatterjee and Neha Dhupia are lead actors in the film who take this route and depict that mindset.
The story is based on a contemporary setting. Prashant Bharati (Priyanshu Chatterjee) is a media man from Mumbai who wants to expose corrupt politicians and the frailty of media through his profession. He has become the president of the student union twice in Lucknow University and he wishes to go to the top. Kiran Talreja (Neha Dhupia) is the ladder to his goal. Kiran is a model whom he had met at the Lakme Fashion Show. She too wants to make a position at the top by any means. She doesn’t hear to her mother as she feels that her advice will only stop her from achieving her ambition. Prashant who wants to benefit from Kiran, encourages her in her goal and also introduces her to people who are supporting him.
As they do so and start together in their journey, they dump their principles and only focus towards their ambitions. This gives rise to a killing instinct between them and they become bloody enemies of each other.
