Many filmmakers make films for money. Only a handful makes films to bring about change in the society. Well, producer Sekhar Yalamanchi deserves praises for having the courage to make a film like ‘Ganga’ that could make sea chance to the progress of the society. Director Vemu too deserves accolades for coming out with such a novel idea. The film indeed cuts deep into the roots of social evil called ‘jogini system’ that is practiced by some people in the rural Andhra Pradesh. It is a practice whereby the elders in the village marry off small innocent girls to god. They sleep with them after reaching puberty and later become source of enjoyment for the male folks in the village. ‘Ganga’ brings to light the evils of this practice.
Katamayya Patel (Jayaprakash Reddy) is a landlord in a village and what he says is the law of the land. He enjoys joginis forever after they attain puberty. Now, he forces Ranganna (Chandramohan) to make his daughter Ganga (Priyanka) a jogini and arranges a second marriage. Ranganna leaves Ganga to Devakka’s (Tara) care and leaves the village, as he can’t withstand the pressure.
In the meantime, Shankar (Venugopal) visits the village, claiming that he is doing research on jogini system and stays in Devakka’s house. He calls in a jogini by name Rangasani (Eswari Rao) and develops good rapport with her by addressing her mom. He comes to know how girls become joginis and the pain they go through. Now, he is determined to do away with this evil.
He then comes across another landlord in the village by name Narsanna (Ranganath), who is a thorough gentleman. Narsanna revolts against Patel but he retaliates by demanding him to repay back the money he has borrowed. Shankar rescues him by paying the loan.
Shankar and Ganga are in love but Narsanna's son Suryam (Ajay) also admires her. He decides to turn her into a jogini to win her. He challenges the villagers to win in 'Utla Pandaga' during Krishnashtami, whereby Ganga will be kept in place of 'Utti' and whoever touches her first would take her. He also puts across a condition that only people from the village could participate in it, thinking that Shankar is not from the village. But the truth is Shankar is the son of Rajeswar alias Rajanna (Suman) and brother of Devakka. All is well that ends well. Suryam realizes his foolishness and the film has a happy ending.
All the lead actors of the film say, Venugopal, Ajay, Tara, Eswari Rao, Delhi Rajeswari, Sivaparvathi, Jayaprakash Reddy and Ranganath have done their respective roles with ease. Eswari Rao’s performance deserves a special mention. Comedians Mohan and Babumohan have also managed to bring the house down. Koti’s music is brilliant and Andesri’s lyrics could make the blind see. Shekhar’s dialogues are another piece of gem in the film.
To sum up, the film is a success in itself even if it may not stay in the theatres for 100 days. Director Shekhar has achieved in putting across the message he wants to convey through the film and that too rather beautifully. Watch the film, learn something.
