The teamwork in ‘Classmates’ is likely to see it through at the box-office. The bunch of young actors in the film has all contributed in making this entertainer a trendsetter. It is a campus love story that tells about a band of friends who has completed degree in Chemistry in the year 1991-92. It is a new tale of love, friendship and nostalgia.
Sukumaran (Prithviraj) is a firebrand student leader with left ideologies. Satheesan Kanjikuzhy (Jayasurya) leads the opposite faction in the college and his friend Vaalu Vaasu (Vijeesh) helps him in all his activities. Pius (Indrajith) is a rich and spoiled brat, whose parents are in the gulf. He goes after different girls every other day. Murali (Naran) has a beautiful voice and everybody in the college loves him. Thara Kurup (Kavya Madhavan) is the daughter of a politician and a danseuse. She wins many prizes for her performance. The group also has Estappanachan (Jagathy Sreekumar), a hostel warden. He is popularly nicknamed in the campus as Vadivelu.
The college wears a festive look but the mysterious death of Murali spoils it all. Murali has a dream to reunite these classmates a few years after graduation. Now, his parents Prof. Iyengar (Balachandra Menon) and Lakshmi Teacher (Shobha Mohan), who teach in the same college try to fulfill his dream. Sukumaran is now a diamond dealer in Mumbai who has been going through hard times with tasteless married life. Satheesan is now an MLA, Pius is in the Gulf and Thara is still single and runs a dancing school. There is more to the reunion of these classmates than just nostalgia. Watch the film to know it all.
The film has well-etched roles for all the characters. Prithviraj and Kavya have done good job especially in emoting. However, Indrajith is the top performer and his timing in renditions is commendable. He is going to go places from here. Naren ala Sunil has done a great job though his role is small. Other actors like Balachandra Menon, Vijeesh, Jagathy, Shobha Mohan, Suja and Radhika have all done justice to their roles. The director has thrown in good amount of emotions and suspense to the film. Scriptwriter James Albert’s classy narration is one of the strengths of the film.
On the whole, it is a good entertainer. It is sure to set a new trend. Go, watch the film and have fun!
