‘Omkara’ is the celluloid representation of the greatest playwright of the century Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’. Vishal Bharadwaj who had formerly transformed ‘Macbeth’ into ‘Maqbool’, brings you another great play of the bard for the first time in Indian screen. After his adaptation ‘Maqbool’ was well received both critically and commercially, Vishal got inspired to make a film on the finest plays of all time. He has reinvented the story in his own way in a new setting but retaining the body and soul of the play. The spirit of the story remains the same with the contemporary setting making way for a modern approach and feel.

The film is set in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh in the milieu of political warfare. Love and passion, jealousy and obsession, deceit and treachery, loss and gain stream through the story of the film. This is the journey of a brave man who loves his woman blindly and for this love and jealousy; he also blindly destroys his life.

Omkara (Ajay Devgan) is lovingly called Omi and he is the head of a gang of outlaws. He is the chief of the group, which includes Langda Tyagi (Saif Ali Khan) and Kesu (Vivek Oberoi). Langda is a shrewd man and Kesu is energetic and this makes Omi appoint Kesu and not Langda as his chief lieutenant. This threatens the pride and esteem of Langda and in jealousy he hatches a plot. He entangles Omi's beautiful wife Dolly (Kareena Kapoor) in a love affair with Kesu. Aiding him in his treacherous plan is his wife Indu (Konkana Sen Sharma) and Raju another moaner of the gang. The plan looms to take a horrid shape with allusion and lies, as Langda keeps poisoning Omi's mind. One day Omi lets loose and destroys everything only to realize the impact of it after everything is done. It’s too late for him, what he has done cannot be undone. But everything is not over yet. There is a twist there!
