Audio Review : Music for your soul

Producer: Nitin Manmohan
Director: Anubhav Sinha
Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Amisha Patel, Jaya prada,  Master Yash Pathak, Manoj Pahwa , Gulshan Grover
Music: Vinay-Shekhar
Lyrics: Panchi Jalonvi

Tathastu brings back the authentic flavor of qawali music. Vinay- Shekhar blend the traditional qawali music with modern instruments. The result is a masterpiece. Going with the seasonal musical style Vinay-Shekhar have come out with a single. But unlike its predecessor it is sure to open a new style in filmy qawali tradition. From now on the music director-lyricist-singer combo of Vinay-Shekhar- Panchi Jalonvi- Hamsar Hayyat will be remembered for this song.

Tathastu directed by Anubhav Sinha has Sanjay Dutt and Amisha Patel in the lead. This movie talks about the increasing rich-poor divide and its effect on the modern society. In this Sanjay Dutt plays the role of a helpless father fighting for the life of his son. This movie has very less scope for music. So there is only one song in the movie- a situational song- depicting the inner feelings of the lead character.

Which music form is more suited than qawali to show the personal bonding between the God and His worshipper! So the music director jodi Vinay-Shekhar have used this form for their only song in the movie ‘Tathastu’. ‘Allah o Ali ‘ is the lone song in the movie ‘Tathastu’. It is an ingenious amalgamation of the traditional qawali form with the eastern and western musical instruments. The lyric by Panchi Jalonvi is best suited to the theme of the movie. The song is heard in the background when Sanjay Dutt visits Gods abode seeking his intervention in his fight.

Chadthe toofan mein uthar sakta hoon mein
Tere naam leker kuch bhi kar sakta hoon mein
Aaj mere sajde ki llaj rakhna varna
Mein bandagi ki hadh se guzar sakta hoon..

These powerful lyrics’s effect is intensified by the music and the voice of Hamsar Hayyat. Hamsar Hayyat is the chief qawal of Nizamuddin mosque in New Delhi.  Just listen to his album ‘Apni  Masti’  to know why Vinay-Shekhar hunted for him all over Delhi and made him sing the lone song of the movie.

The music director duo used the instruments only as a complement to the vocals of Hayyat.  This technique intensifies the feel of the song. Hamsar Hayyat puts all his heart in this song to make this a phenomenal success. In the true qawali fashion the pace of the song intensifies in the end. Altogether this is the most striking song of this year. The words are so meaningful and aggressive that it will keep reverberating in your soul.

Hawa ke rukh pe diya rekha hai maine
Hawa ko tevar badalna hoga

One word to talk about this one song mindblowing!

The remixed version of this song mars the beauty of the original. You don’t need remixes for this kind of divinely music.Other than this song the album contains some of the other beautiful qawali compositions. All of them are super hits from movies down the year. ‘Tumse milke dil ka’ another composition in westernized qawali mould from the movie Main Hoon Na. The rest of the songs are ‘Tum to There Pardeshi’ from the album Bewafa Tere Masoom Chehra ( sung by Mohd Aziz), a remixed version of the song  Mere Saath Saath Chalte (Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaya), Shubha Mugdal’s ‘Ali Ali’, songs from the movies like Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya ( Teri Jawani Mast Mast), Sirf Tum( Ek mulaquat Zarrori Hai), Tumko Na Bhool Payenge( Mubarak Eid Mubarak) and Tere Husn Ka Jaadu  Chal Gaya( Tere Husn Ka Jaadu Chal Gaya).

In short this a great compilation of beautiful qawali’s you love to hear often. The star of the show is “Allah O Ali’. Even if you are not a qawali enthusiast you should buy this album for the sheer pleasure of listening to good music. The album is worth a buy.
