Movie Review : Aparichit (2006)

Producer: Ravi Chandran
Director: Shankar
Cast: Vikram, Sada, Prakash Raj, Nedumudi Venu, Vivek
Music: Harris Jayraj

How many of you are happy with the society we live in? Very Less! Every day we complain about one or the other thing. We know or have a notion about how the society should function. But we do nothing to change this. We blame everything on the government and system. But who are we? Are we a part of this system? Is it not our duty to try to make a change? The movie ‘ Aparichit’ talks about a man who thought that it is his duty to change the world. The way he chose may not be the right one. But at least there is an attempt.

Shankar, director of the movie wants to send across the message that only we the ‘aam junta’ can change the world. Shankar is a man who is always concerned about the society. He used his movies to impart his ideas to the people. His movie ‘Gentle man’ took up the issue of corruption in medical colleges, while his other movies ‘Nayakan’, and ‘Hindustani’ talks about corruption in the society as a whole. Some may say that now days there won’t be any takers for this kind of movies. But the success of ‘Rang De Basanti’ tells another story.

This movie features Vikram in triple role. Ambi (Vikram) the lawyer is a very righteous man. He fights against the evils of society. Everyone, including his father (Nedumudi Venu) thinks that he is abnormal (that is the word society use for those who are the only sane ones!). One day he comes across a site on Hindu Puranas- ‘Aparichit’. The site talks about the punishments a sinner gets when he reaches the netherworld. Ambi is awakened by what he read. He feels that the sinners should be punished not in the hell but here in this world. To mete out the punishment he transforms himself to ‘Aparichit’. Then starts a series of killings. Each one gets the death he deserves. The city is shocked. The supercop Prabhakaran (Prakash Raj) is in the lookout for a clue that will lead him to the killer.  After much investigation he zeroes in on Ambi.

Vikram plays a man with multiple personality. He is the idealist Ambi, the destroyer of evil-Aparichit and the flamboyant Remo. He acts out all these roles with ease and credibility. In one scene all the three characters in Ambi comes out in a flash of a second. Vikram stunned his audience with that performance. Among other actors Nedumudi Venu and Prakash Raj stands out. Sada has done her part well. Vivek with his comic timings excels in his role.

The songs in this movie are truly south Indian in taste. But the theme song “Stranger in Black” and “Gora Gora” will surely enchant the Hindi audience. One man needs a mention. It is Sabu Cyril, the one behind the beautiful and gorgeous set. The set used in song sequence is very eye catching.

All the departments of this movie are excellent. Camera work by Manikandan is superb. Action scenes (there are a lot of them in this movie!) directed by Peter Heynes is very realistic.

And the man who needs a pat on the back is Shankar, the director of the movie. First of all he has made a wonderful film in Tamil ‘Annyan’ and then he dubbed it to Hindi without losing its core theme. Even though it drags in some part it succeeds in capturing the interest of the audience. The theme of the movie is such that anyone can relate to the story. Director Shankar has done well with the selection of the story and its treatment. The only blemish this movie has is its overindulgence in violence.

In short, Aparichit is a good movie to watch. It has something in it for each and every audience.
