Bollywood filmmaking is going the unconventional and different way and this is what the current set of release focuses at. The urban and multiplex audiences strive to see something unusual is making the film makers tread to experimental path. All these facts holds true to director Ashu Trikha’s just released ‘Alag’. He shows the male protagonist with extraordinary powers, with no hairs on his body, head and face, something on the line of sci-fi, someone who defies the stereotype, but will such a different concept settle well with the moviegoers? This is a question that only time will answer best.
The film draws inspiration from the Hollywood flick ‘Powder’. For the people who are dying to watch something different will get a treat with this film along with some good performances especially by the lead actor Akshay Kapoor.
The story of ‘Alag’ begins with a death. Hemant Rastogi is a middle-aged man who was supposed to be staying alone in a house. He dies of cardiac arrest and police is called. Upon investigation, police realizes that there is something eerie, something strange about the whole setting. From the house to its lone occupant, there is some secret behind the closed doors that makes its presence felt. Their doubts about the house become stronger when neighbors tell them that not just Hemant Rastogi but someone else occupied the house too. As suspense continues to pile up, a shocking finding hits everyone hard! Police comes to know that there indeed was another occupant to the house. This person is Rastogi’s son Tejas (Akshay Kapoor) a young boy who had been hidden in the house for eighteen years in darkness, and didn't have any knowledge about the outside world.

It is decided that Tejas would be admitted to an institute that was run by Purva (Dia Mirza). The sole aim of this institution with Purva and her father (Jayant Kripalani) was to look after orphans and youngsters who had just stepped into the world of crime. Purva is happy to look after Tejas but is intrigued by his personality! He is simply different from any other man. He looks ‘different’. He acts ‘different’. As Purva shows her care and love for Tejas, he too is more than excited to taste the flavor of the world that is hitherto unknown to him. While Tejas wants to learn everything around him he also realizes that the world as seen in books was quite different from what he was seeing through his own eyes. Things were not merely good or bad, black or white - there were far more complexities involved. Meanwhile Purva too starts observing some unknown traits about Tejas. There were many more factors about him that amazed her and made her look at him in awe! Because Tejas had some special powers that were never before witnessed. In nutshell, Tejas was a powerful person that belied all logic and theory!
The premise surely sounds very believable. The lead character of the film is sympathizing and identifiable never doing anything that is unjustified. But the film lacks on emotional and romantic quotient. There are poor songs gelled in the strong script and this is the downside of the film. On the other hand there are many cherishable moments that you’ll enjoy sitting through and the innovative climax ends the film on a good note. And for all the things you’ve to credit director Ashu Trikha. Cinematography by Fuwad Khan is first rate. Akshay Kapoor proves his potential in the role that demands a lot out of him. He gets into the skin of the character and gives out fresh and spontaneous scenes. Dia Mirza also does a good job and makes her presence felt. Others in the cast like Yateen Karyekar, Mukesh Rishi, Jayant Kripalani, Tom Alter and Beena are commendable.
Go for the film only if you want to taste something new and different. This characteristic may prove to be a hazard to the business of the film.
