Like the lead character in the movie ‘Alag’ its music is also different from the rest. It is not an easily hummable tune, but can be heard at leisure. We have seen a lot of movies with handicapped characters in the lead from the mentally retarded boy from Koi Mil Gaya to the blind girl in Fanaa. This movie also talks about a man different from others. This is the first outing of the ace photographer Subi Samuel in the role of a producer. Directed by Ashu Trikha , it has Dia Mirza and the newcomer Akshay Kapoor in principal roles. Rahul Seth and Nusrat Badr write the lyrics.
The opening number ‘Sabse Alag’ opens up the story line for the viewers. It gives the viewers an insight in to the character and his world- a world which is different from the world we live in. The song uses minimal orchestra so that you can enjoy the lyrics and its rendering perfectly. It is sung in a very low tone. It creates a lasting impression in your mind. The track has two versions. Kunal sings one version, a solo, while Kunal and Gayathri Ganjawala along with Shaan, Hemachandra and Nihira Joshi sing the next one. This track features all the leading actors in Bollywood.
Unlike the first track the next one is a foot tapping number rendered by Vasundhara Das and Shaan. The song ‘Hai Junoon’ comes under the category of Indi-pop and is best suited to play in a discotheque or club. The remixed version is far peppier than the original one.
After a long gap here comes another tapori track ‘ Apun Ki Toli’. Even though the lyric sounds tapori, the music fails to create the tapori feel. Shaan, Kailash Kher, Aadesh Shrivastav and Vasundara Das croon this song. This is a song not worth mentioning.
'Saanjh Ki Pighalti' is one of the best compositions by Adesh. This classical number soothes you down. Ujjaini sings this song. Krishna and Anand Sharma provides the background voice. This new experiment adds to the beauty of the song. It is a haunting number you love to listen in a lone long drive. It has the old world charm.
The final track ‘The soul of Alag’ is a complete theme song with a classical feel to it. The song starts with just two instruments playing in a low voice. But later the drum can be heard in full blast. Ujjaini and Hemachandra lend their voice to this one.
In short the album is okay with one or two beautiful tracks. Adesh Srivastava has tried to be innovative. The song like ‘Saanjh Ki Pighalti’ is to be cherished.
