Movie Review : Pokiri (2006)

Producer: Indira Productions
Director: Puri Jagannadh
Cast: Mahesh Babu, Ileana, Prakash Raj, Ashish, Ali,
Music: Mani Sharma

‘Pokiri’ is a typical Mahesh Babu film filled with formulas. So, the actor’s fans will have a nice time watching it. However, there is nothing new in it. In fact, it has many plots taken from Hollywood, Tamil and Malayalam films. The comedy tracks of the film are just a copycat of a Tamil comedy film.

Pandu (Mahesh Babu), a hit man in Hyderabad runs into Ali Bhai’s (Prakash Raj) gang. Now, he climbs the ladders and becomes famous. In the meantime, he falls in love with Sruthi (Ileana), who is an aerobic teacher. However, a corrupted cop (Ashish Vidyarthi), who has connection with the gang, targets Sruthi.

It happens that Pandu is none other than IPS officer Suryanarayanan. He has gone undercover with a mission and that is to do away with Ali Bhai’s gang. The rest of the film is on how Pandu accomplishes his mission.

The film goes round the hero’s heroism and the villains are there only to glorify him. However, Mahesh Babu has done a great job and the action sequences are fantastic. The fight scene in a local train and the shootout among the ruins are simply admirable. Heroine Ileana has pumped in lots of glamour into it. She has the making of a big actress.

Sayaji Shinde is a director’s actor, as he does exactly what the director tells. Nasser has ably created sentiments as the father of Pandu but Brahmanandam-Ali-Venu Madhav’s comedy track slows down the pace of the film. It is technically good. Mani Sharma’s songs are energetic and racy. Shyam.K.Naidu’s camera work is fine and so too is Venkatesh’s editing.

On the whole, ‘Pokiri’ is stuffed with lots of mass masala elements targeting the mass audience. So, in a way, director Puri Jagannadh has reached his desired goal. Mahesh Babu fans and mass audience will love watching it.
