Audio Review : Pokiri – Sacrificing melody for energy

Producer: Indira Productions
Director: Puri Jagannadh
Cast: Mahesh Babu, Ileana, Prakash Raj, Ashish, Ali
Music: Mani Sharma
Singers: Karthik, Mahalakshmi, Naveen, Ranjith, Suchitra, Nihal, Muralidhar, Suchitra, Kunal Gaanjawala

The music album of ‘Pokiri’ is out for all to listen. Manisharma has composed some stylish and peppy numbers but it is not up to the expectations. He has concentrated too much on style, energy and modern instruments instead of relying more on his strength – melody. But the remix version of "Galagala paarutunna Godaarilaa" from Superstar Krishna's ‘Gowri’ is a treat to the ear. Most of the songs in the album belongs to ‘run of the mill’ category. Mahesh Babu and Ileana play the lead roles in the film. Manjula Sanjay produces it on Indira Productions banner and Puri Jagannadh is the director.

“Devuda” is a peppy solo number and suits the hero of the film Mahesh Babu. It has a catchy phrase "Ah Devo devo devo devo devo devuda” that is well sung. The picturization of the number would have the actor running after her girl. The usage of instrument and chorus in the interludes is fine though it could have done better. Naveen has sung it really well and Bhaskarabhatla's lyrics are also good. This number gives right momentum to the album. It is sure to catch the youths by the ear.

“Dole Dole” is a sensuous duet song beautifully sung by Suchitra and Ranjith. Suchitra’a voice suits the song very well and Ranjith is not lagging behind. The use of violin in the interludes gives good feel. The lyrics are mixed with Hindi and Telugu words. This number should be shot against a beautiful location.

“GalaGala Paarutunna Godaarilaa” is a remix version of the song with same title from superstar Krishna’s ‘Gowri’. The music director has used the original tunes though the lyrics are different and new modern instruments have been used in the remix version. Nihaal’s voice is perfect for the song. It would have been better without the chorus in English. In short, it is a very good and melodious number.

“Ippatakinka Naa Vayasu” is a good song and is likely to be an item number. However, it sounds like a Bollywood remix songs that have become so popular these days. Suchitra has sung it so well and Murilidhar has given her company. The makers of the film would love to use this number with a bit of exposure to attract the audience.

“Jagadame” is a fast song with heavy chorus, beats and lots of instrumentation. It would introduce the hero. Kunaal Gaanjawala has sung it with lots of energy and his high-pitched voice sets the momentum. In spite of it all, this song is not very appealing. However, Mahesh’s dancing skills can make it a very enjoyable and popular number.

“Chododdu Antunna” is a ‘run of the mill’ kind of duet number with good beats. You will feel as if you have heard this song earlier. However, it is a passable number, as the tunes hardly sticks to your head. Mahalakshmi and Karthik have sung it with lyrics by Bhaskarabhatla.

The combination of Manisharma, Mahesh and Puri Jagannath is really hot. So, the expectation on its music is high. But Manisharma has failed to live up to the expectations this time around. "Devuda Devuda" is the best song of the album and songs like "Galagala paarutunna" and "Ippatakinka naa vayase" could become popular. However, the fate of this album will depend on the fate of the film at the box-office.
