Producer: Rangita Pritish Nandy Director: Vikram Bhatt Cast: Aftab Shivdasani, Amisha Patel, Esha Deol Story: Vikram Bhatt
After trying his hand successfully at Bollywood masala movies Vikram Bhatt goes serious with Ankahee. This movie talks about a man torn between two women. The story is supposed to be a reel adaptation of his real life.
Ankahee is a story about relationships. You have seen a lot of movies with the same story line. Remember the movie Arth by Mahesh Bhatt? It has the same storyline. Bollywood had produced at least one film in every era with this subject. But what makes Ankahee different from the rest is its treatment. Vikram Bhatt like his brother has given each character space and scope for growth. They have not been treated as characters, but real humans. It may be because the story is too close to his heart. The performance of the actors’ matches with intensity of the story line.
The story starts with an aged Dr. Sekhar (Aftab Shivdasani) meeting with his estranged daughter Sheena (Hrishita Bhatt) and handing her his diary. The diary unfolds storyline.
Shekhar, a doctor by profession is leading a happy life with his wife Nandita [Amisha Patel] and daughter Sheena. One day Miss World and Bollywood star Kavya Krishna [Esha Deol] walks into his hospital with a slit wrist and then slowly in to his life. The weak willed Shekhar fall for Kavya. For Kavya (Esha Deol) Shekhar is her incurable obsession. Soon, their relationship becomes the talk of the town. When the news reaches Nandita she confronts Shekhar and he submissively admits to his extramarital affair.

Nandita tries everything in her power to save her marriage. But she is unable to get her husband out of the clutches of the overly possessive Kavya. Torn between the two women, Shekhar chooses Kavya over his family. A choice he regrets forever.
The actors had given their best in this film, especially Esha. She has portrayed the role of an obsessive, suicidal maniac perfectly. With this film Esha has proved that she can deliver more than what she has been doing previously. Amisha Patel as the wronged wife puts up a commendable performance. Her acting is controlled yet powerful. Hrishitha Bhatt also comes out well in this movie. Vikram Bhatt’s in-house man, Aftab comes out with one of the best performance ever. He has handled the role with perfection.
Screenplay by Yash-Vinay and Vikram Bhatt is neatly crafted and cohesive. It never deviates from the subject on hand. Even the dialogues compliment the emotional graph of the story. Pritam has scored the music keeping the story in mind. That is why the songs are in harmony with mood of the film. Cinematography by Praveen Bhatt succeeds in capturing the emotions perfectly.
The only drawback of the movie is that it drags too much in the second half. The story line caters to the taste of women viewers mostly. It is a serious, true to life emotional movie. Those who expect another Vikram Bhatt masala will be disappointed.
