Noted choreographer Prabhu Deva successfully ventured into film direction through 'Nuvvastanante Nenoddantana'. Now, ‘Pournami’ is his second film. It is quite different from the kind of films rampant today. It is based on a custom called "natya nivedana" that was practiced during the 16th century.
A lady (Archana) living in a draught-affected village performs dance continuously for seven days in devotion to Lord Shiva. Rain pours down following her act and the dry land turns green. From then, people start believing that her effort brings luck. Thus the custom of offering dance every 12 years by a female member of that family comes into existence.
The film takes you back to 1953. A dance teacher (Chandra Mohan) has two daughters Pournami (Trisha) and Chandra Kala (Charmee). He teaches dance to Pournami. He marries another woman (Manju Bhargavi) after the death of his first wife (Sangeetha). However, Pournami leaves the village with her father’s help, as her stepmother is trying to give her to the zamindar (Rahul Dev) of that village in the name of "natya nivedana". She roves around with a Banjara tribe for survival.
In the meantime, Shiva Keshava (Prabhas) falls in love with her. He is on a warpath with a gang who murdered his brother. Pournami dies when the rivals try to gun down Shiva. Her last wish is to make her sister Chandra Kala to offer dance at the temple. The rest of the story is on how Shiva accomplishes her wish.
Prabhas has a good role in the film and he has given justice to the role. Trisha has done the title role well and she looks beautiful. Sindhu Tolani and Archana too have done good job but it is Charmme who has got the bigger pie. Rahul Dev looks suave as the villain and the other cast too has performed well. Devi Sri Prasad has composed soothing music with wonderful lyrics written by Sirivennela.
In a nutshell, ‘Pournami’ is a good film and audience would love it.
