‘Banaras’ is all about human relationship with God. It also talks about the relationship of great people like Buddha, Kabir, Tulsi and Shankaracharya with Banaras city. Making use of this subject, the film tells the relationship of a young girl with her parents. Urmilla Matondkar, Ashmit Patel, Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia and Raj Babbar play the lead roles with good support from actors like Akash Khurana, Arif Zakaria and Javed Khan.
In the film, Shwetambari (Urmilla Matondkar) is a bright young girl from a rich Brahmin family. She studies Science in a university in Banaras. Soham (Ashmit Patel), a protégé of Babaji (Naseeruddin Shah) teaches music at the university but he belongs to a low caste. All hell breaks loss when Shwetambari falls in love with Soham.
Now, conservative elements take control of everything. The young lovers are even in the position of losing everything. Shwetambari’s parents (Dimple Kapadia and Raj Babbar) try to neglect the social aspect of marriage for the happiness of their daughter. But this very move lets in dark elements to take control of the situation.
Heart-broken by the incident, Shwetambari decides to leave the city she loves. She starts looking deep into her self to find an answer. She becomes an internationally noted teacher in philosophy and religion after 17 years. Yet again, she comes across a hard choice either to go to Banaras to meet her dying father or continue to leave aside all attachment.
Now, will she come back to Banaras? Will the dark things haunt her again if she comes to her old city? You have to watch the film to know all these unanswered questions.
