Audio Review : Uttank impresses with his music

Director: Priyadarshan
Cast: Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Reema Sen
Music: Uttank. V. Vorra
Lyrics: Sai Bavre, Nawab Arzoo, Nitin Raikwar, Chhaya Vora

Comedy movies usually boast of good script rather than good music.  Music is used only when a situation wants it. In a comedy film the music and the picturisation should be realistic and should go well with the theme. So songs in a comedy flick rarely become a rage.

‘Maalamaal Weekly’ comes under the genre of comedy movie. Directed by Priyadarshan this movie star the who’s who of comedy, from Paresh Rawal to Ritiesh Deshmukh. The story centers around a prize-winning lottery and the effect it has on the simple village folks. A new entrant to bollywood, Uttank V.Vorra composes the music of this movie.

The album starts with the song ‘Yeh Ajooba’. Mahalakshmi Aiyer and Javed Ali lend voice to this Sai Bavre lyric. Western musical instruments accompany this funny number. When this song comes on screen you can see people laughing hysterically. It is not melodious number to make people swoon over. But a comic song where the comedy lies not in the way it is sung but in the situation it is set. This song is repeated many a times in the movie.

‘Sun Mere Mitwa’ is a village song. This is perfectly matched with the theme of the story that is set in a village. Nawab Arzoo writes the lyrics. Karsan Sargathia sings this song well. It has an old charm to it.

‘Kismat Se Chalti Hai Duniya’ will make you dance. It is composed in the typical village play style. Even now you can see this kind of music playing in Indian villages. This is an enjoyable song with a distinct rustic feel to it. Vaishali Samant lend voice to this Nitin Raikwar lyric.

The next song ‘Hansini O Hansini’ features Ritiesh Deshmukh. This is a funny romantic song. The song will be remembered for the scene in which it comes. Javed Ali and Shreya ghosal sings this Nitin Raikwar verse.

‘Sar Sar Sar Sarti Hawa’ is a duet. Javed Ali and Mahalakshmi Aiyer lend their vocals to this track. It is the kind of song which was usually enacted by Dilip Kumar. The lyrics by Chhaya Vora are wonderful.

This album does not boast about hit tracks, but most of the songs in are enjoyable. The lyrics and the music take you to the villages.  As a newcomer Uttank Vorra has done a good job. He has composed music with the theme in mind. It surely adds to the impact of the movie.
