Movie Review : Mercury Pookkal

Producer: Aaradhana Reddy
Director: S S Stanley
Cast: Srikanth, Meera Jasmine
Music: Karthik Raja

Director Stanley has succeeded in making ‘Mercury Pookal’ a good film by pouring in campus life and family sentiments after failing terribly in his last film ‘Pudukottailirundhu Saravanan’. In fact, he deserves praises for moving away from regular mass commercial films that are ruling the Tamil box office. He also seems to have good understanding with hero Srikanth. The film is all about a couple who hates each other.

Karthik (Srikanth) is a happy youngster who does MCA. He marries Anbu Selvi (Meera Jasmine) because of parental pressure and much against his wishes. Anbu Selvi also doesn’t want to marry him. So they decide to part ways.

But then, they slowly feel soft corner for each other and Karthik also comes out successful. However, series of events and misunderstanding makes Anbu Selvi to go back to her native. This leads to rivalry between the families. The rest of the film is on how Karthik takes back Anbu Selvi into his life after convincing both the families.

Srikanth’s performance in this film is much better than his earlier films. He seems to have worked really hard for the role. He looks smarter and emotes well. Meera Jasmine has done her role really well. She also adds glamour to the film. Samiksha appears in a few scenes and does a hot number but she doesn’t have much to do. Delhi Ganesh and Mahadevan have done superb job in playing the role of Srikanth's father and Meera’s father respectively. They emote so well throughout the film. The performance of the other cast Karunas, Sneha Nambiar and S N Lakshmi is also fine.

On the flip side, Karthik Raja's music is not that impressive. The second half of the film is full of action sequences and a couple of misfit songs slow down the momentum of the film. However, director Stanley has done a wonderful job and he deserves accolades for moving away from the current trend. ‘Mercury Pookal’ is a good film.
