The film starts in a documentary style and then slowly unravels surprises one after another. It has lots of incidents that took place in the past in real life. Debutante director Guruprasad has pumped in lots of information into the film and has message for the soul too. But it would have been much better if it is trimmed a little to speed up its pace. Still, this film has its worth, as it is quite diverse from the usual cheap films. The director has succeeded in conveying the message that today’s youth should earn their own living.
The pontiff of the Sri Mata gives up his post for want of wealth. So, the administrator gives out a notice to head the Mata. Surprisingly, he leaves behind all the influential candidates and selects a bunch of guys including a barber, intelligent youth, sex hungry person, beggar, drunkard, a run away youth and a poor Muslim boy. He tells them to give up Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Madha and Matsarya in life. They are sent to another Mata for further training, as they make series of mistake. This move leads to spat between the senior and junior swamiji.
Meanwhile, the sex hungry swamy gets life imprisonment and a murder also takes place. Then, the youth runs away from the Mata sensing the ugly scenes inside the sacred place but the police catch him again. Now, the administrator of ‘Sri Mata’ asks the youths to leave the place after paying Rs.80000 but they have no money to pay. Their parents have ignored them, as the administrators of the Mata looks after them very well. With no money to pay, the youths are forced to take up the sacred book and they are given the deadline to finish the lessons.
The youths then gives up everything and try for the top position. Barber Venkatesh (Jaggesh) succeeds in occupying the throne but gives up the seat, saying that he is happy to be with his friends. Now, the original swami comes into picture and the youths also take up different jobs in the Mata. 60000 US dollars also reaches the 'Mata' at this point of time.
It is Jaggesh’s hundredth film and he has reached the mlestone in style. His acting, dialogue delivery and expressions are impressive. The other five actors who play the roles of youths also add to the beauty of the film. Veteran Kannada actor Sudarshan has done justice to his role. Three songs of the film by Manohar are soothing and get along so well with the film.
Director Guruprasad deserves all the praises for making ‘Mata’ a good entertainer with loads of fun. He has used flashbacks for story narration and it’s looks good.
