Producer: Geeta Director: Vishnuvardhan Cast: Arya, Bharath, Padmapriya, Pooja Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja
Vishnuvardhan showed from his first film itself that he is a stylish filmmaker. His latest film ‘Pattiyal’ is a revelation of this quality. He has brought in lots of style and freshness through this film. The exploration of the Chennai slum dwellers and the hired killers arouses the interest of the film lovers. The video footage, badly lit location, thrilling action scenes, fast editing, digital imagining and wonderful performance from the cast are the highlight of the film. The director has beautifully highlighted the bond between two friends.
Koshy (Arya) and Selva (Bharath) are orphans. They are hired killers for middleman Sami (VMC Haneefa). Koshy is a rough and tough guy. He has no emotion and talks a lot. Selva is a deaf and dumb guy. He too is fearless but has some human emotions. They both are happy doing their job as contract killers for the rich and don’t think of life beyond slum.
Saroja (Padmapriya), who works in a garment factory, loves Koshy very much though he never feels for her. Meanwhile, Selva falls in love with Sandhya (Pooja), a salesgirl in a medical shop. This affair brings out the romantic and emotional sides of Selva.
Sami then gives the duo a big contract to kill Nachimuthu Gounder (Santhanabharathy), who is a businessman and a politician. This incident turns their life out off gear, something they never felt earlier and this leads to an ugly and cruel climax.
The director has succeeded in bringing out the best in the lead cast. VMC Haneefa has done the role of Sami, the middleman really well. Padmapriya does quite a diverse role in this film and she carried it off so well. Pooja also has done justice to her role. Arya is hot as well as cool. His body language and mannerism give a clear picture of a gangster. His romantic encounters with Padmapriya are terrific entertainers. But the best among the actors is Barath. His role as a mute guy is heart touching. His facial appearance and large eyes tell the pain he goes through from his inability to communicate his feelings. It’s difficult to keep your eyes away from him. In fact, the audience rejoices when he knocks down Gounder in the climax. The director has etched out Selva’s character from ‘Bangkok Dangerous’ and ‘City of Gods’
The film is technically very good. Lighting and camerawork by Nirav Shah, Raj Kannan’s dialogues and Sreekar Prasad’s editing added to the beauty of the film. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music and background score are the backbone of the film. The songs are beautifully placed. The first half of the film is a bit slow but it catches up its speed in the second half.
Director Vishnuvardhan deserves all the praises and accolades for making this wonderful film. ‘Pattiyal’ is indeed a very realistic film. Film buffs should not miss it.
