Director Selvaraghavan and music composer Yuvanshankar Raja seems to share great chemistry. Something good always comes out when they come together and the audio of their films ‘Kadhal Kondein’ and ‘7G Rainbow Colony’ are perfect examples. So, something special must be brewing, as they are coming together again in ‘Pudhupettai’ that deals about the life of the underworld dons in Chennai city.
Music director Yuvanshankar has composed the songs with Chapraya Symphony Orchestra in Bangkok. He has composed some beautiful songs and instrumentals that depict the different moods of the film. Songs sung by Kamal Haasan and Dhanush are surely going to become hits. The instrumentals are also soulful and emotional. The music director deserves praises for making genuine attempt to make good music. In fact, he has achieved what he wanted. Now, he has joined the big league of music stalwarts.
"Survival Of The Fittest" is the theme number of the film, and so, it is catchy and sweet. Yuvan has come out with soothing instrumental that touches the soul. The sound of violin is so sweet. In fact, he is very much like his father as far as this number is concerned.
Kamal Haasan has sung the number "Neruppu Vaayinil" so beautifully. He gives his best whether it’s acting or singing. His voice suits the mood and theme of the song and the use of Brazilian samba by Yuvan adds beauty to the number. The director of the film Selvaraghavan revealed that this peppy song is about the life of an assassin.
"Enga Yeriya" has come out exactly the way Yuvan wanted it to be. It is a rustic and straight from the heart kind of number. The lyrics of the song are written as if a local rowdy is telling his might to the people. It begins with traditional tharai and thapattai but lively western tunes overtake it in the end. Dhanush’s voice is not good but Na Muthukumar’s beautiful lyric overshadows it. Yuvan and Premji sing rap in between and the number brings the picture of a slum to mind.
"The Beginning" is a brilliant instrumental composition by Yuvan. He is his father’s son in this slow and soft number. The sound of the violin is so melodious and the lone trumpet makes a different feel to the listeners. Yuva deserves praises for this wonderful piece of work.
Yuvanshankar Raja surprises the music lovers with something new, and "Oru Naalil" is one such numbers. He has sung this number with great ease and vigor. Its music is like a fusion of Eric Clapton and Ilayaraja’s kind of music. The soft touch of the bow on the strings of the violin is going to steal the hearts of the listeners.
"Prelude" is a captivating number from Yuvan and Chapraya Music Symphony. It seems to depict the four seasons of a year. This number has a slow start but picks up it momentum later. It is appealing to the ear.
"Varriyaa" depicts the nightlife in Chennai city. It is about what the rowdies visualizes, so, it is hard-hitting and composed keeping in mind the taste of the local people. The appropriate use of percussion and sweet chorus has made all the difference to the number.
"The war cry" is a good music that tries to make the listeners visualize the battlefield. Yuvan has successfully used western touch and violin to create the aura of a war and the emotions involved in it.
"Oru Naalil" is a fast and foot-tapping number. It is a fusion of western music of the 1970s with an Indian touch. Western instruments are used but it sounds Indian. This number would become hit off well in the dance floors.
On the whole, Yuvanshankar Raja has done a wonderful job. The songs are soothing and catchy with incredible instrumentals works. The album is simply brilliant.
