‘Nottam’ is about the emotions that come about from human relationships and how different people handle differently. The film has a backdrop of the 2000-year-old performing art form Koodiyattom.
Vasudeva Chakkyar (Nedumudi Venu) is an exponent of the now near defunct art of Koodiyattom. He lives in an old hamlet in Nadana. He devotes his life to the art and also has a few followers learning the art. A foreigner visits him often on research, though the people don’t appreciate the art at all.
Saraswathy (Margi Sati) works as Chakkyar’s partner on stage, as she is also a proficient exponent of Koodiyattom. They soon fall in love but Chakkyar’s parents marry him off to another girl (Vanitha). Saraswathy remains a spinster and continues to work with Chakkyar, as there is none to fit her place. Vanitha on the other hand knows her husband’s past relationship with his stage partner but remains as a mute spectator and a good wife.
Renowned Koodiyattom exponent Margi Sati has won lots of awards in her career. This time, she is making her debut into films by playing the character of Saraswathy. Vanitha is making a comeback with this film after a long gap since her marriage. She plays Chakkyar’s wife in the film and Jagathy Sreekumar plays his close friend.
Sasi Paravoor not only directs the film but also writes the script. Salin Mankuzhy handles the screenplay and dialogue while K.G. Jayan takes o the camera. M. Jayachandran scores the music with lyrics by Kaithapram.
