Movie Review : Boyfriend

Producer: Vidyasagar
Director: Vinayan
Cast: Manikuttan, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Mukesh, Sreenivasan, Madhumitha, Nandini Prasad
Music: M.Jayachandran

Director Vinayan takes too much time when it comes to story telling and presentation. There are many hiccups in the script and the film losses its momentum in the second half. Still, it is a brave attempt by the director to do such a film with a new hero. The film has a campus setting based on a murder mystery with right dose of comedy.

Ramesan (Manikantan) is a stylish batsman and a hero in college. His friends even go to the extent of calling him Sachin Tendulkar. He is the only son of Nandini (Lakshmi Gopalaswamy), an employee in the Secretariat office. She loses her husband, and so, she has a special bond with her son as a young mother.

However, the court lets the Home minister Natesan (Mukesh) free in spite of being accused of sexually harassing Nandini. Natesan again abuses her in his speech at a college function where Ramesan studies. This invites the anger of Ramesan. He hits him with his cricket bat signed by Sachin Tendulkar and which is supposed to be presented by the minister.

He takes shelter in a ladies’ hostel run by his close friends (Madhumita and Honey), as the police are looking out for him. He is again branded as the main accused after Natesan is murdered a few days later. And the investigation on this murder mystery by a young police officer (Sreenivasan) reveals lots of interesting facts.

Newcomer Manikantan has the vigor and talent to act, particularly in action scenes. But he needs to improve in his dialogue delivery. Lakshmi does her role well, though she looks too young to be Ramesan’s mother. Sreenivasan does the comedy part well but he should have avoided sniffing on the grounds for facts like a dog. Madhumita and Honey’s roles in the film have not much importance. If not for the song by Yesudas, the music of the film by M.Jayachandran would have been really bad. On the whole, the film is a brave attempt by the director to do something different, though it drags a bit. Vinayan deserves a pat for his work in this film.
