Movie Review : Mazhai - Entertainer

Producer: SPB Charan
Director: Rajkumar
Cast: Jeyam Ravi, Shriya, Rahul Dev, Natarajan, Kalabhavan Mani
Music: Devi Sri Prasad

Jeyam Ravi, playing the angry young man, is impressive in stunt sequences. His well-built physique works to his advantage. Shriya, who combines glamour with acting abilities as the leading lady, shows promise. Director Rajkumar has done an honest remake of the original film (Varsham in Telugu). Devisri Prasad’s music is yet another highlight of the film.

The film begins with Shailaja (Shriya), a popular actress, being kidnapped by a notorious gangster Deva (Rahul Dev). The producer (Natarajan) of the film seeks the help of Arjun (Jeyam Ravi), a youth who is employed in a quarry to bring back the actress. Arjun, who needs money for his uncle’s hospital expenses, agrees. In a flashback, it is revealed that Arjun and Shailaja were in love and even decided to marry. But Deva, a gangster who falls for Shailaja, lures her as father Sundaramurthy (Kalabhavan Mani) a compulsive gambler with the promise to clear off his debts. Meanwhile, Shailaja gets the chance to act as a heroine in a film. Arjun objects to it. Sundaramurthy poisons Shailaja’s mind against Arjun and separates them and double crosses Deva and runs away with the daughter to Chennai for a career in films. Coming to know about his plans, Deva kidnaps Shailaja. Arjun rescues Shailaja from Deva and she too comes to know of her father’s motive and unites with Arjun.

Apart from the lead pair’s good acting, the film’s screenplay with rain playing a vital part in the story makes it very interesting. Rahul Dev, as the gangster, does a good job.
