Actor Mohanlal looks promising and his best is yet to come. He has done a splendid job in Joshi directed film ‘Naran’. Veteran director and scriptwriter Ranjan Pramod created an aura to fit the actor’s larger-than-life image perfectly with a combination of action and emotions. The film has nothing new in it, but the presentation and the presence of such a good actor like Mohanlal made all the difference. He has set new trend again by portraying feelings like anger, love and joy by his facial expressions and body language. His powerful performance in ‘Naran’ has made all the difference.

Mullankolli is a rural village situated near a river. Velayudhan (Mohanlal), an orphan is brought up by a generous feudal lord Valiya Nambiar (Madhu) after the floods carries him there. Velayudhan grows up into a notorious guy and a drunkard but with a good heart. He can’t tolerate injustice and sets his own rules for the villagers. Everyone including moneylender and politician Kurup (Jagathy) are scared of him.  But Valliya Nambiar’s son-in-law Gopinathan Nambiar (Siddique) on the other hand wants to rule the village in his own way.

Velayudhan has all the authority and he listens to only Valiya Nambiar and Kelappan (Innocent) who looked after him when he was a child. The villagers like Kurup and Gopinathan brought down rowdies from other places to finish him off but in vain. There are three women in his life namely Kunnil Shanta( Sona Nair), a prostitute, his ex-admirer Janaki( Devayani) and Kelappan’s daughter Leela (Bhavana). The ploy of Gopinathan to eliminate Velayudhan leads to lots of fights, twists and turns.

The main aim of the producer, director and scriptwriter is to cash the superstar that would fit the Onam season. Deepak Dev’s music is fine with only two songs. Hogennakal and Polachi locations make the film look fresh. The artwork of Joseph Nellikal and camera by Shaji’s is superb especially the scenes of water bodies. But on the other hand, the second half of the film is a bit boring and doesn’t have much to watch. On the whole, Mohanlal’s superb performance is commendable. And you must watch the film if you are his fan.
