The saat (7) phere gets slightly stretched to 7½ in this comic entertainer staring Juhi Chawla and Irrfan Khan in lead. Going by the offbeat name, don’t mistake this film to be an offbeat one. In true sense of the term it is a small budget film, a different kind of entertainer about a marriage and a sting operation being carried on there. Newcomer Ishaan Trivedi directs the film. For this sweet entertainer the music is by Shantanu Moitra who has done some awesome work in the film of the present time in films like ‘Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi’, ‘Parineeta’ and ‘Yahaan’.
Apart from two fresh inputs by Shantanu Moitra, the rest of the songs are just cover versions of other tracks you’ve already heard. To suit the marriage setting in the film, we start with the celebration track sung by Sunidhi Chauhan. With a merge of traditional and western music, this song will surely find a place in the marriages of the season.
A lovely composition, again earning accolades to Shantanu Moitra is ‘Kyun Aaj Kal’ sung by the fresh voice Antara Choudhary. A lovely number with lyrics by Subrat Sinha, this is intoxicating.
Some pretty good numbers take on from here, compiled out of popular hits. You won’t mind hearing Shazia Manzor’s ‘Ghar Aaja Soniye’ once again, for the number is fantastic and ethereal. The song has input of remixing by Bally Jagpat, doubling the charm of the track.
Hear ‘Jiya Jale’ from ‘Dil Se’ with the line ‘You a Virgin?’ playing constantly at the background. The remix hardly is able to do justice to the track composed originally by A.R.Rehman. ‘Dil Se Re’ from the same film also finds a place in the film.
The Marathi folk number ‘Aika Dhondiba’ get new attire with fresh touches by Shantanu Moitra. Manrel Gaikwad has written the lyrics and a new singer Pronali Chaliha has crooned the track. The rhythm and the pace make the song popular once again.
Taking a pick from the old, there is the next track from ‘Jaanbaaz’, ‘Tera Saath Hai Kitna Pyaara’. Babul Supriyo and Anupama Deshpande redo the song for this album. The song doesn’t have the caliber to set a mark on its own like the original composition. Hema Sardesai puts her best efforts for ‘Yeh Mera Dil Yaar Ka Deewana’ and is able to pull along fine.
One doesn’t understand the need to bring along the remix and cover versions tracks for a film that has a totally new concept. Apart from 2-3 tracks, the others don’t fall in place, rating the overall album in average category. As of now the filmmakers can best rely on the film to do some entertainment covering up the disappointment of the album.
