Movie Review : 'Chocolate'

Producer: Vibha-Ragini
Director: Vivek Agnihotri
Cast: Anil Kapoor, Suniel Shetty, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Emran Hashmi, Tanushree Dutta, Sushma Reddy
Music: Pritam

‘Chocolate’ is a different treat by debutant director Vivek Agnihotri. This film with an unusual name has an unusual theme too. The film has in the lead frontline actors like Anil Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Emraan Hashmi, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan and Miss India Tanushre Dutta.

With sharp twists and turns in the plot, presented in a slick way, this is one film in the recent time that promises to provide some good entertainment, the Hollywood style. The film has been extensively shot at the foreign location of London and is set in the milieu if London. The main characters of the film are five Indian people who get trapped in cases against unlawful and terrorist activities.

Krishna a.k.a. Krish (Anil Kapoor) is a very somber and flashy lawyer. He doesn’t bear injustice and practices law without giving in to any partiality. Winning cases has become his flair that he takes pride in. During the eve of Christmas in London two Indian gets arrested with their alleged connection with terrorist activities. Monsoon (Sushma Reddy) is a journalist and is handling their story before the media. On learning about their case she decides to help them out. She gets in touch with Krish to solve the case. Because of the soft corner he has for the lady, Krish decides to help her hesitantly.

He goes to interrogate Pipi (Irfaan Khan) and Sim (Tanushree Dutta), the two victims arrested in the case. Pipi is an artist while Sim is a waitress by profession. The two in flashbacks recall many incidents, which ultimately led the law make allegation against them. They say they belong from the group of five musicians and make a living taking odd jobs during the day. Rocker (Sunil Shetty) is obsessed with Sim, Tubby (Arshad Warsi) is a cheerful man and Devaa (Emraan Hashmi) is a musician. But things are not as transparent as it seems to be, as Krish in the process discovers many hidden truths. What does he do from here?

Some complex sub plots have been weaved in a skillful manner to the main plot. The climax of the film is the most surprising of them all.  Technically the film is aplomb with good handling of camera and innovative shots. Music by Pritam is another positive aspect for the film. But the continuous diversion in the mood of the story makes the affair complex sometimes. The dialogues are too heavy and you’ve to follow them continually to keep a track on the film.

Vivek Agnihotri as a debutante looks quite confident in his craft. The film moves with easy pacy and the story unfold as the film progresses.

Anil Kapoor astounds again with his performance, managing it with élan. He gets into the skin of the character and acts natural. Though sometime in the process he has gone over board. Irfaan Khan’s name in regard of acting can also be taken in the same breath. Tanushree Dutta is mischievous as a temptress and the girl is improving gradually. Emraan Hashmi, Arshad Warsi and Sunil Shetty play their part well.
